I hate to be a spoil-sport, but today did not start a new decade.

Yes, this is the beginning of the 20s; but 2020 is still part of the last decade. As there was no Year Zero, Year 10 was part of the decade that included Year 1. Thus, Year 2020 is part of the decade that started with Year 2011.

That's actually a matter for debate.......

While many agree with you, it should be noted that for computational reasons, astronomical year numbering and the "ISO 8601" standard designate years so that AD 1=year 1, 1 BC=year 0, 2 BC=year −1, etc. In this instance, a new decade would indeed start wi...

Oh, I have something very special incoming - most definitely spelled Whiskey!

You will approve, for sure I'm a little worried as I've not heard anything back from the distillery, I sure hope they haven't sold out. If and when it arrives, I'll post on Food & Wine. Stay tuned! NickO

Technically, a decade is...

...any span of 10 years. I usually celebrate my decades beginning with my birth date. Nonetheless, Happy New Year to you and yours! -John

All points are interesting.

My point: it doesn't really matter. Considering this is all based on a human construct (Gregorian Calendar), there is no need to split hairs. Pick the beginning or end of any decade you chose and celebrate accordingly. www.nytimes.com Enjoy today ...

Yes, but since there was no year zero...when we reach 2021, this would signifies we have completed the 2021st year.

So then as we now proceed through the 2021st year, we are in the next decade, no?

Decade shemcade

If you are talking a 10 years span, yes. If you mean the 2010's decade....

 By: Ronald Held : January 2nd, 2020-12:08
Then no. There is no year 0! The count is from 2 BC 1 BC then 1 AD, etc.

According to me they were.

I’m claiming I’m right!😏

We celebrated the end of 2019

 By: als1678 : January 3rd, 2020-10:18
Of course you are right. Don't confuse this with birthday celebrations etc. I will celebrate my 100th birthday after I have lived for 100 years, not 99.
