Leap Year Indicator.

Curious as to your thoughts. Is the leap year indicator REALLY that important on a watch?? Personally I see no need as it happens only every 4 years. Just my opinion, that absolutely no one asked for

Sure, I don't see any practical motive for it --- anyone who forgets what year we are in, certainly won't be any faster in doing arithmetic modulo 4...

I'm sure it's only for aesthetic/traditional reasons. Also, that's the first trick I use to immediately tell annual from perpetual calendars in the pictures ;-)

I don’t have too many experience with perpetual calendar watches

... but for the one I have, the only time I really use the leap year indicator is when I’m setting the watch, otherwise I never need it. Best, David

A perpetual calendar without the Leap Year indicator. The dial is less cluttered. The Patek 3448 is one of my favorite watches as is the Patek 1526. Those dials are so beautiful.

Lange too

The same is true in my view on the Langematik Perpetual vs the Saxonia Calendar. In that the Saxonia Calendar has an very clean and elegant dial. If there is going to be a perpetual indicator I prefer it in a small window myself.

And I love Moser's interpretation very much, with the leap year indication in the back.

The main (maybe the only?) reason is the setting of the perpetual calendar, allowing the movement to know in which of the 4 years of cycle it is.

There are some interesting proposals where the leap year indication is very discreet, like the old ones from GO: A little hole that show a color code (usually, red for the leap year). When it shows the white color, like this year, it is almost invisible.....

Well, for setting the watch/date/year it is a necessity.

And the most elegant solution is placing it on the backside, like Moser does.

On a time-only watch, it is totally unnecessary.
