Thoughts on Hodinkee limited editions

 By: Ted O : January 8th, 2023-17:21
I am sharing some language from a query I found online below, as I am interested as well: “First I was surprised to learn that a watch blog website has enough influence to make major watch manufacturers produce a run of limited edition watches for them, t...

If everyone is happy... enjoy your time.

Collabs can be good marketing too for both entities. Plus more choices means, ummm, more choices 👍 ...

PS: Monochrome does GREAT collabs.

And have to say, the Czapek Monochrome has been my best acquisition of the year. Incredibly versatile plus works great with an integrated bracelet and a wide variety of straps. Looks formal-ish to sporty depending on strap. I look forward to Monochrome's ...

PPS: Revolution does fun collabs

This one was announced very recently. Looks fun! ...

Indeed!

I should approach our Mountain Man Watchmaker... I think he understand the importance that WatchProSite brings to the Independent space - we are the premier brand forum for independents and without us... Independents wouldn't be as well known nor as accep...

Many here are longtimers, we know a one or two.. or three-year wait is acceptable. If I may humbly say, WPS is *the* top-tier discussion forum. Another board does their R brand (or sister company T) giveaways. Another does more affordable group buys. Imho...

Agreed!

 By: patrick_y : January 8th, 2023-23:26
It's a lot of financial risk. And WPS isn't really set up for it.

So...

Back to our Tantalum Blue Reverso Tribute idea.... Limited to 20 pieces? 25? When will you ask the lovely people at JLC? We want a polished dark metal, but non precious. So either Tantalum or a polished Titanium. Simple 822 movement to keep down costs.

They probably are not...

 By: patrick_y : January 9th, 2023-18:33
Sadly. But if you ask... We have a chance!

I will ask, again.

Interesting, Wife has wanted a Reverso...

 By: enjoythemusic : January 11th, 2023-03:41
...ever since she saw one on the series Halt And Catch Fire . Display back and proper movement decoration is a must of course. Perhaps a Pink or TIF blue dial for the ladies?

JLC isn't about a lot of movement decoration...

 By: patrick_y : January 11th, 2023-04:25
JLC makes decoration more of a secondary or tertiary priority.

 By: enjoythemusic : January 11th, 2023-13:12
Must be a vintage model Reverso, so it has more decoration(?). Do you know the model as wife is interested. external-preview.redd.it

I could be wrong..

 By: KURT_DAVID : January 8th, 2023-18:59
Hope my memory serves me well, I seem to remember WPS and D Dornbluth doing something together that produced a very handsome piece.

Apologies.

 By: KURT_DAVID : January 8th, 2023-22:12
I’ve been browsing watches too long. Will investigate. Certain it is a Dornbluth though. It made an impression on me for sure wherever I had seen it. Regards, Kurt.

Found it.

 By: KURT_DAVID : January 9th, 2023-10:44
It was “The Dornbluth &Sohn - Timetotalk Project” not a WPS article. Sorry for the confusion. Regards Kurt

Here’s a poor screenshot.

 By: KURT_DAVID : January 9th, 2023-11:19
I don’t know how to share a link to the article, sorry. I think Jocke was involved with it. Cheers Kurt ...

Ahh, this one!

 By: Henke : January 8th, 2023-18:39
I could reasonably remember the dink's collabs. Nowadays not so much, there are so many... I am not so sure it's that difficult on the part of the larger brands to do a collab. Most are just dial recolors, after all, and it's a lot of "free" marketing. Un...

My view on Hodinkee limited editions

 By: Weems@8 : January 8th, 2023-19:10
I do not care. Why? First of all it is a magazine. Is a watch more special when Hodinkee put their name on it? Hummm i do not think so. By the way, i have nothing against them. All is different when Tiffany comes in. The desirable Tiffany green is just am...

I don't want the Hodinkee name on the dial either

 By: jmpTT : January 9th, 2023-02:43
A Tiffany co-branded watch is desirable for the rarity. I happen to really like Tiffany Blue as a colour as well. It is a very strong brand association with a great colour. The Hodinkee name isn't easily associated with a colour or a logo - it doesn't hav...

A Tiffany fan

 By: Weems@8 : January 9th, 2023-19:42
Do you know the song Breakfast at Tiffany? Nice song. Sure the color and the heritage of the jewelry house is famous. Even the watches branded in cooperation with Patek are desirable. Do you seen the watches of Tiffany made? Not bad!

It’s been a win win for both parties as far as I can see.

 By: Jay (Eire) : January 8th, 2023-19:23
Hodinkee and others (like Revolution which was mentioned above), and all the forums least us not forget, have continuously produced variations on watches which collectors desire. In many cases the tweaks to the dials or other facets of the watches are nua...

Well said.

Let's be honest - there is no such thing as "watch journalism".

 By: als1678 : January 8th, 2023-20:47
Any commercial watch blog or site has to find way to survive and the Swiss watch industry is small, conservative, intolerant to criticism. If you write about watches for a living you need to be careful with your words, otherwise future access would be den...

Hodinkee is a powerful and well-connected outlet in this business, it's unsurprising they (as well as other relevant players in the watch world) are trying to capitalize on their popularity in various ways, including these collaborations ;-)

 By: FabR : January 8th, 2023-21:46
Am I personally interested in ANY collaboration between a watch brand and a blog, or a car manufacturer, or even between two unrelated watch brands just because the design looks good? Honestly, not a chance! But the base of watch fans --- and consequently...

Hodinkee is more of a sales platform than a news website...

 By: patrick_y : January 8th, 2023-23:23
Hodinkee first started off as a news website. But after the original owner sold out to an investor, that investor/private-equity group decided they wanted to make "serious money" and weaponized the website by turning it into a platform for watch sales. He...

Surprised? No. My thought was, "Finally."

"The watch would look so much better without a date window." "It would look so much better if the diameter was reduced by 3 mm." "Why can't I get this beautiful hand-wound chronograph movement in a steel case? I don't want to pay extra for a soft 18 ct go...

H**tinky ? why not a Seven-Eleven watch? :-) ...

 By: MilDiver : January 9th, 2023-06:32
Hodinkee is nothing more than a well-managed business platform to make money by selling watches. And BTW a majority of the "info" sites in our hobby are similar. There is no different between them and Bob's beside the mass of "journalism" they produce. Mo...

Hodinkee was one of the reasons I got into this hobby.

 By: Nicetomeetyou : January 10th, 2023-13:43
Although it’s not what it once was, I think that watch enthusiasts need to be more inclusive and less divisive. Hodinkee and others like Revolution/SJX do still put out good content for free that might not otherwise be possible. As well, some of the limit...
