3-4 years

If I’m not mistaken, it was first introduced in gold about 3-4 years ago.

Meaning it must have been designed I would estimate 2 years earlier so the final decision on size is probably 18 months before introduction.

Let’s say 4.5 - 5.5 years ago.

I’m not sure (and actually didn’t really check it either) but that coincides more or less when the demand for big cases had just begun easing down

Analyzing timelines it could very well match and add up and the conclusion that they had a choice:

Select a smaller case: thus betting that slow down of demand for big case would develop into demand for smaller cases growing instead of the big case flattening out
Or select big case: betting that trend for even bigger and bigger (I recall a ridiculous 50 or 55 mm IWC) would stop but demand for the at that time current size (40 was bare minimum) would steady and would not decrease for the benefit of shrinking cases.

Ive probably not expressed my thoughts as clearly as I have them in my head but hopefully you get the general intend haha.

But anyway, we can analyze past decision from here to eternity, fact remains they’ve got in my view an ultra nice watch with a very creative and informative way of displaying the timezones (provided you’re familiair with airport identifiers and not a person who travels by boat only) but which is simply to big to high to bulky.

Shave of 1-2 mm in height, and 2-3 mm in size and I’ll go to the boutique same day to buy one

I like the ingenuity of the methodology to indicate different time zones a lot. I like the dial a lot as well. I like that 5hey managed to keep it reasonably accessible (in steel) In short I like virtually everything about this watch except for one thing:...

Totally agree with you.

A great watch but too large of the wrist. The movement dimensions alone are 39.2 x 8.0mm! So any attempt to make the watch smaller would most likely require a redesign of the movement. Given the complexity of the movement, the effort involved and the smal...

I don’t see that happening either

Which is a pity coz I belief that they would sell many more if only it was 2 mm smaller and 1 mm less high

Pity indeed for exactly this reason.

I wonder if a considerable part of the complication and the associated space requirements are due to the display of time zone names. A nice detail and maybe part of a perceived "complete once and forever solution", but in the end I do not see the real lif...

If the movement is 38 mm theoretically a 42 mm case should work. Perhaps they designed it during the last days when the appetite for smaller cases was still absent.
