Could become GO's RO

Feb 20, 2011,03:11 AM

Thanks for posting the pics, Jocke. I really like the design. The panorama date works much better here than in the Sixties, IMHO. It reminds me somehow of the digital displays of some quartz or radio controlled watches - which is meant as a compliment in this context as it shows some nice sense of humour: The watch is not a re-issue of some iconic watch of the past but has design clues of the seventies which is the decade in which quartz watches became popular. Probably with the blue dial which is said to be brighter in the center and becomes darker towards the bezel the seventies theme will be more evident.
Although it has an integrated bracelet it is not a Nautilus look-a-like in my books. Imaging the watch without the popping-up bezel it reminds me more of a Cartier Santos.
I think that the Seventies allows many different iterations (similar to AP's Royal Oak). I think that already with the different dials it will look from fancy (blue dial) to elegant (ruthenium grey dial). I am hoping for a more affordable time-only version and i think a chrono in bi-compax layout with cushion shaped counters like Tag Heuer's Monza could be looking cool. I could also imagine a more sporty version with a black or grey-to-black dial, luminous markers, a ceramic bezel and the choice of an all brushed bracelet and a rubber strap.
BTW, due to an italian source the movement is the 39-47 known from the Sixties Panorama Date, case size is 40mm.

Cheers,
Christoph

The new Seventies........

What do you think about it? This message has been edited by Dr No on 2011-02-26 10:14:50...

I'll give it some time...

...but at first blush, I'm underwhelmed. I love Glasnutte (owned 4; still own 1) but my very first impression isn't exactly to rush out and buy it. But this could change and I could be in the minority. What movement is inside the case? Jocke, your photogr...

My opinion is divided -

I love the case: it's got a real Genta / PP Nautilus vibe going on. The dial, though - it is nice in its own right, but clashes too much when paired in this case. I'd much rather more rounded markers, unlike the present sharp and triangular indices.

Looks like a "Not-a-lus". Sorry, couldn't resist...

The jury is still out until I see it in the metal, but looks promising. At first glance, I think I'd prefer different hands (perhaps "stick" style) and no date window on this one. Thanks for posting these photos. --CJ

No movement pictures?!

Fantastic photo as usual, Jocke. Best Tyler

I gotta see more...

Reminds me of the Rados of old

Great shots again!

Like some others have said...it does look like a Nautilus

In the case and bracelet. Dial design is unique though. I think I would like it more in leather. Not very familiar with this watch though. Great pics as usual. Best, Horo

Thanks guys, not my pics. [nt]

Sorry, guys, but I don't get how you can compare it to a Nautilus.

 By: amanico : February 20th, 2011-03:16
Because a watch is round, you will compare it to a Rolex? Come on! You could also compare it ot a Heuer Silverstone, by the way. No, it is, obviously, a daughter of the seventies, an era when all wasn't ( and didn't turn .. ) necessarily round. When shape...

I must get my eyes checked...

still looks like a Nautilus to me : ) I see your points, but as many would undoubtedly consider the Patek Philippe Nautilus the benchmark for watches of this style (thinner cushion shaped case, stainless steel with integrated bracelet, automatic movement,...

To me, this is not the " renaissance " of the Nautilus " ...

 By: amanico : February 20th, 2011-05:23
But rather the re birth of a certain kind of watches, which belong to the 70ies, as well as the Nautilus or the R.O. There were much more TV screen watches than the Nautilus, and when I see this G.O, I still don't see a Nautilus. The finish is not the sam...

I've got to agree with Nicolas on this score . . .

 By: Dr No : February 22nd, 2011-16:35
. . . because the Nautilus represents a rare hybridization of aesthetic style, in which a circular form is elicited from a nominally square foundation. This latest G O hews more towards the "TV screen" designs popular in the early '70s, with Omega and Zen...

Excellent observations all. Very interesting topic to say the least.

 By: polarbear1990 : February 22nd, 2011-19:24
Coincidentally, while making the "internet rounds" today, I came across a Genta-designed VC Chronometre Royal from the early 70's (no pics to share here unfortunately, though there are some on a certain well-known auction website) which also shares the "c...

Much better than a comparison with the Nautilus, the Ref 3597.

 By: amanico : February 22nd, 2011-22:39
Which is another Patek... ( Credit pic: W.O.T ) If you absolutely want to link it with a PP. You see the difference with a Nautilus? There is a world of a difference! Best, Nicolas....

Excellent example, thanks.

 By: polarbear1990 : February 23rd, 2011-09:05
There are certainly many similarities between this PP ref.3597 of the seventies and the Seventies; however, while very different, I still think Nautilus when I see the integrated stainless steel bracelet with both brushed/polished surfaces paired with tha...

Another close case...

nice picture and interesting comparison

 By: swjoseph : February 20th, 2011-04:54
isn't it intersting to see people compare it to Nautilus and Rado at the same time. I find it more Rado than Nautilus and that is before I see it in metal. Even with Jocke's superb skill, the look doesn't strike me as a GO or a watch from a top tier manuf...

At first sight, the bracelet reminds me of a Concord Mariner bracelet design...

It reminds me most of the square Royal Oak quartz

Also, I would have much preferred the date to have been at the traditional position at 4. Apart from that, I like it depending on its actual size.

Wow, this is really something...

 By: KIH : February 23rd, 2011-05:35
... I got excited about from GO in a year (since Senator Chronometer). I don't care or think of the alleged resemblance with Nautilus, which is IMO another animal. This is really very nice. Ken Class of... well, not 70's...

Hmm, this isn't made for me.

 By: Goh : February 24th, 2011-04:56
Though I am sure it has its fan. For me, I would much prefer the Sixties. Thanks for sharing, Goh

Sixties . . .

 By: Dr No : February 24th, 2011-10:23
. . . vs Seventies . . . Different decades, different vibe. Same for the respective Glashütte Originals ;-) . . .

That's a nice watch. I like it.

 By: VMM : February 24th, 2011-07:45
Very seventies, that's for sure. I saw also the blue dial version and it's even more 70's than the black one. It's that kind of blue (not Miles Davis') watch brands used back then, it's a blued green or a greened blue. The MSRP it's a bit high, IMO, but s...

I like it....

I really like the looks of this watch. When I look at it as simply a watch, and not as a "seventies-inspired-watch", I like the looks. It's strong, a bit bold...could be a nice addition due to its different shape. I'm guessing by the looks of the case tha...

Good news first, or bad?

 By: dxboon : February 26th, 2011-06:54
The good news is that I like the unusual TV-ish shape, which screams 70s to me, and I like the looks of the bracelet, but the watch's dial is a total fail for me. The in-your-face big date just dominates what could have otherwise been a very subtle, attra...
