Interesting...

While Peter's knowledge of GP far exceeds mine (and that of most people on the planet), and his enquiry to factory led to contrary evidence, I'm, tempted to believe that they may well have been produced in very small numbers.

I say that because Peter himself posted the image below, an image showing an identical style chronograph, albeit with a different movement. I have a difficult time believing that a military service (as Peter postulated) or anyone else could have, or would have replaced a complicated original movement with a working, signed val. 720. In other words, I believe that it is more likely that a small number were produced, and that, over time, all traces of the limited production run were lost by GP.

As a related aside, I have recently engaged in a very interesting conversation with Longines about an uncommon vintage model. One of the facts that emerged is that while there were several special parts used in the (chronometre) movement, they were not published on any material lists for the caliber! My point is that manufacturers did not necessarily keep perfect records, and especially of limited run models.

Also, while you may have already found it, here is a video of the model in question in operation (you must click on the GP in the right hand list) :

Hello, I am new on this forum and I admit my near total ignorance on all things GP. I have been offered a GP chronograph with flyback function, that appears to be a civilian version of the type 20 from the late 50's early 60's. Did such a watch ever exist...

OOPS I meant Valjoux' cal 720.

Dear Tony C., Thank you for your information. I did not see it my self but I concur with you that it would not make much sense of making fake watch using Valjoux' rare cal. 720. I read somewhere that the entire production of cal. 720 was only 200 pieces, ...

...and it is certainly very possible that a small number of these watches were made. Cheers, Daos
