Wine organization tips?

Dec 09, 2022,16:55 PM

We have about 100 bottles of 'good' wine that has been haphazardly stored over the years. Ideally I would get a very large wine fridge but we don't have the space. But we do have a nice space under our hallway stairs that is relatively cool and always dark.

I bought a nice rack for 72 or those bottles and have other, smaller racks that hold 12 bottles, so between them all we should be able to fit everything. The idea is to buy more racks as the collection expands, but we really do need to drink more of it : )

So the question...is there a logical way to store it other than the usual reds/whites, etc.? If I put the oldest bottles on top, won't it be a pain to move everything once we drink the top row? Same problem with oldest on the bottom.

I have the free version of Cellar Tracker that I need to do a better job of updating, so that will help me keep track if I am good about updating it.

I would love to have a 'cave' like Bill and others, with bottles everywhere and make it a treasure hunt, but my wife does not agree : )

Any tips or tricks welcome.

Btw, the majority of the collection is nice California Cabernet, Pinot Noir, and Petite Sirah. No whites to speak of.

I am a bit of a Philistine when it comes to wine… I know my way around whiskey and spirits pretty well… I have an auxiliary fridge in my garage, but I also have a below ground basement that stays relatively steady at around 60 to 65°. I’m wondering what t...

...only because (I think) there is also a humidity element. And even though our house is fairly large, there just isn't a spot for a large wine fridge unless I take over one on the upstairs bedrooms. Again, my wife would not approve : )

The Road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I had the intention of tracking the bottles in and out but quickly gave up. It is like you said more of a treasure hunt. The good thing with some cellar trackers is "when to consume" aspect. My biggest problem is finding the right company and excuse to op...

Amen to that

I have this nice flag locker in one room, which can hold 80 bottles I use the bottom drawers of this cabinet in my office to hold more wine. We have "emergency" spaces in the kitchen so we don't have to leave the room to select another bottle. Downstairs ...

...using the bar code feature makes it pretty easy except for a few oddball bottles. The problem is, I would open and drink a bottle thinking 'I'll mark in as 'consumed' tomorrow' and never did : )

...now, keep in mind, our good stuff is nothing like yours : ) I have the budget for a really nice wine fridge but no place to logically put it. I keep saying that I will build a house someday, and if I do, I will get a couple of big boys for three or fou...

Wow. I think you've got to move more boxes than I do to get to the bottom box...

I think I've got like 10 Original Wooden Cases stacked high and for some odd reason I always end up wanting to see wine in the bottom one. So I get a lot of exercise moving everything around in a teeny tiny space. But I think you probably get more exercis...

Good luck my friend!

I finally figured out how you stay so fit! You're moving wine cases all the time! That's good exercise!

... use an app to track what they have: winemaker, year, quantities, storage location, etc. And they have a ~50bottle for monthly consumption in a fridge in their lounge/kitchen, and a proper cellar for long time storage. But they are french 😀 Best, E. ...

Again, a space issue for me...

...our day-to-day $20 bottles just go on the kitchen countertop and are gone within a week or so. I don't bother with proper storage for those...

That works too...

...but I still have to put a red wine in the mix. I blame my Italian roots : )

Ahh. Good idea!

Scotch is much cheaper than wine too. Maybe not on a per bottle basis, but definitely on a per drink basis.

I have the same problem...

This is a very first world problem. But nonetheless a very serious and expensive problem to have!
