There's a pond separating us, Giles, but yesterday's supper . . .
Nov 04, 2019,11:09 AM
. . . was similar. With a twist.
She Who Must Be Obeyed (hereafter referred to as SWMBO) and yours truly spent yesterday afternoon in Orange County. I needed a new shirt for Kevster's upcoming nuptials, and she, Opium. (The parfum, of course!) So we took a leisurely drive down Pacific Coast Highway to Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach.
We stopped at Traditional Jewelers, where SWMBO tried on a mid-sized steel Connie accented in rose gold.
I liked it on her wrist.
I gave her a glance.
"What do you think?", said I, "would you like a modern Omega to go along with your vintages?"
Without hesitating, she said, "I've never cared for rose gold."
She's a keeper, no doubt about it.
;-)
It was mid-afternoon when we walked out; one of those pleasant autumn days when we're reminded why everyone moves to So Cal, and the few that leave do so with regret. As we turned a corner, Canaletto appeared.
An exceptional Italian restaurant . . . I'd dined there once before, and even though it was a bit early, we decided to have supper. It was rather quiet, with only a few patrons. We were shown a table in a room where the windows were partially open, a compromise between outdoor and indoor dining. And it was empty - just right for us!
We ordered a caprese to share . . .
. . . while for the main course SWMBO selected the salmon . . .
. . . and I the tagliata . . .
. . . comprised of shrimps, scallops, octopus, white beans, and risotto, all prepared in olive oil.
(We shared the Moretti La Rosa . . . yours truly is still barred from imbibing for medical reasons, so I had only a few sips.)
How could such a meal get any better?
Well, take a look at the view from our window.
Yes, a '69 fastback 429 SCJ 'Stang. Heavily modified and very loud.
I was in heaven.
So, you may ask, how could our experience possibly improve?
Well, we were wearing vintage Omegas, the Flightmaster . . .
. . . on my wrist, and the jumbo chronometer . . .
. . . on SWMBO's. Perfect, right?
Wrong! It gets even better.
Fernando, our waiter, happened to be . . .
. . . a fellow traveler.
I'm still walking on air ;-) . . .
