Sometimes you get lucky, maybe very lucky

I bought a job lot of half dozen wines and champers at a garage sale some ten years ago for a pittance.
Two nights ago ,a gem of a wine from that lot was drunk and what a pleasant surprise as i wasn't confident of storage by the previous owner.
The '98 ornellaia was fresh and refulgent with red fruit and developed complexity over the next two hours with good length and acidity to last a few more years.

the Dom 09was just too young and a bit disappointing by comparison.

Wished i had more of the Ornellaia ,but glad it was such a great tipple.

best

Unfortunately I have never been lucky enough to find a garage sale with such wonderful wines. I have had the same type of surprise buying at auction where you never really know if the provenance is what it is said to be. I need to look through my Italians...

it was just sheer luck------unfortunately never again replicated.

I'm sure we all have stories of consuming great wines at restaurants at a bargain--- but that's another story best henry

My sister gave me a bottle of that as a birthday present...

When I looked it up and saw the price I nearly fainted! I can't remember exactly when we drank the Ornellaia but it was good. My "best deal" was buying 6 bottles of Inglenook (Niebaum / Coppola) Rubicon for $9 each at an auction. We bought another 400 bot...

I have a match to your set.

I started my collection in the us around Coppola. I had my euro cellar but my intro in the us was around Coppola who i found had a real Bordeaux esk feel. ...

I’ll be right up!

At the time I think it was $90 a bottle or something like that. It was a great tour through his winery too, maybe back around 1998. Mike

2 fantastic choices [nt]
