My last sip . . .

Jun 27, 2020,12:44 PM

. . . before quitting the hard stuff exactly one year ago Wednesday was Black Bush.  And I remember thinking, "Not bad!  Not bad at all."

Honestly, Count, I don't miss it . . . having a pint of ale or two a month is all that's needed to keep me satisfied.

It is only a 20 Eu whiskey, but what value for money

It is on par with a Balvenie 12 Double Wood, easily. I think, it will be a long night ... ...

Cheers to you, dear FabR

What an interesting point, that the Black Bush was your last "hard drink".

I am comparing it to a Balvenie 12 right now and do not find a significant difference. A difference that would justify twice the price of the Balvenie. I fully agree to your view: drinking is harmfull, not a health risk but directly damaging ones health. ...

It was gout that did me in, Count . . .

. . . otherwise, I'd be joining you now ;-) . . .

So sorry to hear that, Art!

It is a very fine line, health and one can be so quickly departing from that line.

The good news is . . .

. . . that gout is gone, or at least, under control. Having a pint or two a month doesn't cause a flare, so I'm not a teetotaler. But almost.

That is good to hear

The biggest hinderance in life is looking after ones health.. Under any circumstances. Uncorking this bad boy later ... ...

I just recall: beer might not be so good for you

By: COUNT DE MONET : June 27th, 2020-17:24
Beer contains yeast. That yeast is also causing gout. Spirits do not have any yeast as they are distiled. You might want to check this with your GP, if he wants to give you an advice on what to drink ...

You're right on all counts, Count . . .

. . . but the situation is a little more complicated than it might at first seem. Generally speaking, gout is triggered by diminished kidney or liver function, which permits uric acid build up in the bloodstream and then forms crystals in between joints. ...

You are a very well informed patient

This is how it should be if somebody is suffering with an illnes. My thought was that if alcohol than without the yeast as without it would be a little less gout triggeriing. But it is certainly a minute effect.

I think I’ll join you ...

From the 90ies, judging by the design? Glenfiddich 12 is also a very nice easy drinking whisky,. Like it too. I am having this one right now: the sherry bomb! Cheers to you Captain! ...

That looks good 👍 [nt]

I find the difference(s) between Irish and Scotch so profound I would never think to compare them. Do you find similarities, or are you just noting that the two are easy on the palate?

I think the profound difference comes from the distilling process

Irish whiskey is smooth, nice and round, with an oily mouth taste and surely a result of tripple destilation. This Black Bush is 75 - 80% single malt and the rest is grain. That makes it on the nose smell like a Bourbon, which I like. Compared to the Balv...

This one is quite nice

Sherry in abundance and oak, salt, raisins, ... ...

That's really interesting

The Balvenie 12 years Doublewood is one of my go to whiskies, when I want something light, with high sherry notes. I will definitely give the Black Bush a try. Otherwise, this is what's been keeping me happy of late: ...

Lovely bottle. Thank you for your tip.

I compared Balvenie 12 and Bushmills Black Bush twice this evening and still find the Bushmills is even better.
