Hi Mike, looks like a great pairing.

Although Bordeaux is my first love, I would say my buying and after 7pm enjoyment (must have some discipline)  has been almost equal parts Bordeaux and Burgundy the last 12 months. Being a Burgundy neophyte I did my research both intellectual and the more enjoyable “field” research. Having had a number of red Burgundy vintages between 1957-1972 last year I concur that it can age wonderfully. I am still a beginner compared to my knowledge and experience with Bordeaux, but it’s a fun journey.  I’ve read about the challenges Burgundy has faced with aging white wine and am happy you had an excellent experience. And what a great vintage - 2002.

What I find fascinating about Burgundy is the wide range of aging wine and drinking windows. I had a Chambolle Musigny from Lucien Le Moine tonight from 2016 and it was superb. I left it upright in the bottle and open for six hours and it was very elegant. The tension and minerality I find in young Burgundy was extremely subdued and the wine showed well with a e nice level of finesse. I will never know enough about wine, because it literally changes daily… and well life is too short.

Best,

We had this twenty years old white burgundy last night for dinner.

It was an absolutely perfect accompaniment to the roast pork loin I made. When I first started getting into wine, and burgundy in particular, the prevailing wisdom from the wine “experts “ was burgundy couldn’t age well-white less so than red. Grand Cru i...

Glad to hear it was a great bottle.

Well preserved, I believe, white wines have a longer shelf life than those in precarious storage. From the high shoulder the bottle looks perfectly preserved. Sometimes even an ugly label can produce a good wine. You will never know till you taste it. ...

But this white was really good. I have only one more left.

True that.

...Bourgogne has long shown to have long aging potential, especially from great vintages and houses if well stored. Yours is from a very good producer and a very good vintage for '02. Enjoy your wine!

I did!

The thing is to keep trying.

The hands-on approach is best. Right up to that second bottle!

And after the second bottle, take a hands-off-the-keyboard stance until the next morning

to avoid foolish statements that are too hard to pull back (he said, speaking from experience). Cheers!
