The wedge on the top (barely visible below the 19) is a sliding lock mechanism. It keeps the pushbutton below it (below the 21) locked. To advance the month, you slide the locking wedge upwards and then push the button.
The watch itself is tantalum and rose gold with a ruthenium dial.
I also got to see its "sister" -- the Octa Calendrier (annual calendar) with ruthenium dial (but platinum, not two-tone tantalum/RG) -- change over from 2/28 to 3/1. I was glad to see that work properly too. That's usually the more problematic watch. The retrograde date often hangs up in the middle instead of springing all the way back to "1" at the end of the month. Same with the day indicator. It sometimes gets stuck in between days. Then I have to bang it with my hand and fiddle with the setting mechanism (just the crown, in the Octa Calendrier) to properly set the date and day. But I am used to that by now, and I think these are lovely watches.

I already love the Calendrier layout but the play with materials on this one is is to die for beautiful.
