One reason it has gone downhill
we are obsessed with too many things like Facebook, constant news media, etc. and haven't the peace of mind to focus entirely for years on a project like one of these watches.
I remember hearing Kurt Klaus, the IWC mastermind, talk of his taking long walks every evening, with dog on lease and notebook in pocket, for many many months before settling on the design architecture for the perpetual calendar fitting into the Grande Complication watch.
I can believe that Ludwig Oschling went through similar gyrations for his evolutions of unique watches. But both of them are at or near the end of their genius phases, I think.
True mechanical marvels come out of the mind, not from CAD-CAM design tools or 3D printing.
Even though I avoid news and don't do social media, I can feel my ability to concentrate has deteriorated over the last 30 years since I was conceiving and creating electronic encyclopedias.
Worn out, I guess...
Cheers,
