I really appreciate your thoughts and voice in the discussion of the Astronomic.
Like me, you seem to be a bit of a purist in your thinking. Appreciating a clearly thought and executed concept, (the intellectual watch you describe very well.)
I have to say, I am inclined to agree with your points of critisism and clear thinking. On the other hand, as I tried to put forward in my previous post, there is a back story to this watch and a fundamental ambition. This is not meant as excuses to your points of critism, but my attempt to understand how the final piece came to be.
The point of departure, (to take inspiration from) is to a large extend FPJ pocket watch No 6. I have been able to find a (poor) picture of the backside of PW No 6 and Im sure you can see the familiarity with the annual calendar.
The other point, that we have been explained by people close to FPJ, is, that is was an important ambition for him to prove/ take on the challenge, of making a well executed watch with multiple comlications.
I guess this is where your (our) purist approach fundamentally clashes with this ambition. When i look at your spec list of your "perfect AS", im not sure it would meet this ambition of multiple complication.
While the watch doesnt meet the unoffical definition of a being a Grande Complication in the strictest sense ( the term is often used very loosely) the additional complications, and especially the repeater, certainly pushes it in to this territory. (see definition in watch wiki
en.wikipedia.org
In the end, what makes me make up my final decision on the piece, is of course to see it in the metal. It also to see it “with the heart”. Why we love or dislike a watch doesn’t always make perfect sense.
Thank you again for your opinion, Daniel.
Best regards
Christian
