32 refers to the maximum number of unique hour representations you can do with just five fingers
Jul 01, 2021,16:27 PM
With one finger, you can represent a max of two different numbers (up and down).
With two fingers, you can represent four numbers max (2x2).
Eight numbers max with three fingers (2x2x2).
Sixteen numbers max with four fingers (2x2x2x2).
and finally, thirty-two unique numbers max with five (2x2x2x2x2).
This is based on the binary counting system, which computers use to count (0s and 1s). But as humans, this is relatively unwieldly, so the "simple" counting system of using the thumb and four fingers as proposed by Francis above is practical - we only have to worry about displaying 12 different hours on a watch!
