The Grand Seiko Quartz “Beater”
What every family probably encounters — a nice watch that gradually becomes an everyday one, due to regular wearing, over-familiarity, and perhaps inattention to detail.
I love this just-right-size (36 mm) date-free Grand Seiko with a sparkly dial, Arabic numerals and comfortable bracelet. 
I bought it for my wife who wore it fairly regularly until a few years ago when the battery needed changing. That’s when I discovered the dial was cracked between the 11 and 12 markers. 
I’m not sure how it happened but I am pretty confident that it’s not covered under warranty. Especially since it’s at least 10 years old now. 
It doesn’t seem to have affected its running or accuracy so I’m taking it with as much tolerance as I can muster - so far not annoyed enough to mail it to Japan for replacement.
The best thing about this watch is its readability in virtually any light. No ambiguity regarding which hand is which, or reflections off the dial, multiple levels on the dial, or distracting text.
