PAM36 Marina Militare

We've all read a very good write up and review about the legendary PAM36 before. I'm lucky enough to be able to acquire this rare and very desirable, if not the most desirable Vendome era Panerai.

It has a very unique feature and combination that no other Vendome model has. A combination of titanium case, tobacco dial and tritium indexes.. And what makes it more interesting is that it has 4-line wording "MARINA MILITARE" on top and "LUMINOR PANERAI" on the bottom.. Its predecessor the PreVendome Marina Militare, with PVD coated steel case and base dial (no second hand) but with "LUMINOR PANERAI" on top and "MARINA MILITARE" on the bottom.

It is also the first Special Edition with big-box packaging, like the big SE boxes that we see nowadays.. The previous SE, PAM21 comes with a big box similar to the one on the Sly Tech PreVendome models and the PAM40 which is a kind of Special Edition comes with a regular edition packaging..

But there is a slight difference, which is on the outer box. The SE outer box we see nowadays are hat-box style, while PAM36 comes with a thin paper outer black box.

The Special Edition scroll that comes with it is written in Italian, which when I try to translate it (of course with some online translator help), means "Modeled on a Historic Marina Militare dial (1940) , Made of titanium with transparent case back with a view of personalized movement , example number ... , on an edition of 200pcs)

The odd thing about PAM36, as it has been said before, that it is a 1998 SE Model, but it has a "B" production year, which is supposed to be for 1999 production. Even my scroll was dated 1998.

Coincidentally, when I picked up this watch in Jakarta, I happened to meet a renowned Vintage Panerai collector, who was wearing a Vintage 6152/1 with a similar dial configuration, which got me thinking, that Panerai got the inspiration from this particular model. It was a really nice coincident and a pleasure to meet him.

Now let's see the detail of the watch..

The case is made of titanium, which surprisingly looks really nice.. It looks more subtle, unlike the polished steel case.. And what I like even more is the weight and how it feels on my wrist. I like the feel of a heavy watch, but this light titanium case, makes it more comfortable to wear.

The dial is tobacco color, but it looks subtle, only on really bright sunlight it appears brown-grey color. And the combination with tritium index is a very pleasant one to be seen.. And the fact that it has 4 line, makes it feels more balanced.

Now for the back case, Panerai decided to use a display case back, the first Panerai model that carry an ETA movement with display case back. The movement is personalized with PANERAI monograms all over the plates. The finish is not great but I say good enough for a tool watch.

Finally, I can say that I really love this watch. I've never seen this watch before until I picked up mine. And no regret at all, this is so much more beautiful in metal than it is in the pictures. I tried my best to take the picture of the watch, but really, it has to be seen in metal..

Hope you all enjoy reading this topic

Have a great weekend!
