Friends,
On the wrist today … the 38 mm NEO-vintage cushion case central chronograph. Released in 1999, in a limited production run of about 900 examples in the ivory dial and the same in the black “military dial”.
It won watch of the year award in Japan.
My GP ref 2598 and the less often seen totally high polished case flanks and lug shoulders. The sides remain satin finished
Was this model called the “Vintage 1960” or the “Vintage 1970”? Actually both are correct.
When first issued, the model was named
Vintage 1960. After about 6 months or so, it was renamed to Vintage 1970. The name is engraved on the case back.
Why the name change? Well, GP heritage folks changed their mind on the inspiration of this heritage piece to come from the 1970’s vs initial thoughts of the 1960’s. Oops. I love this quirkiness we sometimes see from GP during this era.
As I was born in 1970, naturally, mine says Vintage 1970. 😎
While these are not crazy rare (for GP at least which was famous for very small production runs), it’s important to find one in good condition. They are after all, about 25 years old now.
The shape of these pieces are sublime. Not so easy to machine with curved lugs that seem to melt into the case shape.
I hope you enjoy these quick pics and blurb on the naming history of this reference.
I find the ref 2598 to be a delightful watch.
Anyone else have a GP on today? Do join the party with a wrist shot. 🥳
