Glashütte Meissen Event at Tourbillon Boutique in Orange County Report

During an intriguing evening at the Tourbillon boutique earlier this month. The Tourbillon boutique hosted a Meissen Porcelain event showcasing the painstaking detail and craftsmanship behind the Meissen artwork and the dials of the Glashutte Original watches bestowing them.

Meissen artist, Herr Thomas Hannss was present at the event displaying the necessary skill in painting the ceramic dials that go into Glashutte Original watch creations with Meissen dials. Herr Thomas Hannss usually creates the Glashutte Original watch dials with Roman Numerals (and does not usually create dragon drawings) and it supposedly takes an entire eight hour day to complete a single dial! The dial has to be painted with the roman numerals and then fired. The roman numerals have to be painted again on top of the existing numerals and be fired again to create adequate depth of colour. Sometimes during the firing process, in-pure elements cause discoloration on the dial that appear as small black specks or spots; the dial then has to be discarded. The dial is hand-painted with a special black ink and a very fine brush made of the belly hairs of the Siberian squirrel.

Many of us PuristS members know of the illustrious story of how Meissen porcelain became the first fine porcelain production house in all of Europe (previously an art that was only mastered by the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean). Thus, it is very appropriate that these two famous Saxon companies, Glashutte Original and Meissen Porcelain, would unite together to create such wonderful works of art that pay tribute to both haute horolgerie and aesthetic art.

I thoroughly appreciated the meaningful event and I thank Tourbillon boutique South Coast Plaza in Orange County, California for hosting such an excellent and meaningful event that evoke upon history and art. The Meissen event was not only an event that showcased Glashutte's excellent watchmaking, but also a meaningful event that illustrates the rich history of Saxon art and savoir faire.
