BBQ in Texas: Part II - Meeting up with a fellow PuristS

I've noticed quite a few food posts recently in the TimeOut forum.  All the pics looks delicious.  But the one that really caught my eye was "The Best BBQ in Texas" post by JerryW ( timeout.watchprosite.com ).

The BBQ looked so tasty that I had to make a trip to visit Jerry and hang out (I've met Jerry from last year's PuristS trip to the UAE and we all had a fantastic time and I was really looking forward to meeting up again)
So last week I jumped on a flight on Continental airlines and a few hours later arrived in Houston.  Jerry was kind enough to pick me up from my hotel in his cool ride: That Bentley Continental GT convertible was absolute gorgeous!

We then headed over to Pappas BBQ for a late lunch:

We both ordered the combo special with 3 HUGE, mouth-watering, beef ribs:

The ribs were very tender and delicious, with a nice smokey flavor.  For my sides I had the Cajun rice and coleslaw.  I also got a side of BBQ sauce for dipping:

It was totally cool that Jerry planned a side trip for my favorite dessert: ICE CREAM!!  And not just any ice cream, we were going for Pistacchio!  We drove over to Paciugo gelato:

YUMMY smile

I had a great time and it was awesome meeting up with Jerry.
During our conversation, he mentioned a famous ice cream place named Amy's in Austin.  So, I made a short flight up to Austin, TX smile

And found out that there was an ice cream festival!!!!!

But oppps!  I was too early as the event was scheduled for the week after my visit sad

Anyway I just ended up staying inside my hotel and tried out a restaurant named Finn & Porter.  I was thinking about having a steak, but noticed a sushi bar.   I took a quick glance at the menu and decided to try it out:

I sat at the sushi bar during happy hour and they gave me a free order of edamame with sea salt:

I order two pieces of salmon sushi, and tobiko sushi:

Closeup of the salmon sushi:

And closeup of the two types of tobiko.  On the right side is the regular tobiko, but on the left was something I've never had or seen, a yuzu tobiko:

The sushi was fresh and very good.  I was pleasantly surprised.  Then I had the chef's special "Rock N' Roll' that had tempura shrimp, green apple, jalapeno with bacon topped with eel, seared proscuitto, miso gastrique and green onion.  I definitely had to order it since it had bacon:

The roll was delicious (well, bacon makes anything taste better LOL):

Then I checked out the dessert menu.  The Remy Martin Louis XIII was tempting but I'll wait a while to try it:

So I ended up ordering the upside down carmelized apple tart:

On my flight back home, I took Jerry's advice and found Amy's ice cream at the airport.   It was excellent!  They didn't have pistacchio so I tried the Dutch Chocolate:

Thanks again to JerryW for a great time.  It was fun meeting up again and I hope to return the hospitality soon.
