A Czech view of the future from 55 years ago - Jested Tower

A while ago I come across a book on Communist architecture, which made for an interesting read. Amongst the many truly fascinating structures was one that definitely captivated my imagination - the 1973 Jested hotel close to Liberec in the Czech Republic.

Built as a replacement for an earlier, very conventional structure it must have been like an UFO, when first unveiled.

And recently I had the opportunity to actually see it live and was impressed at how close it stayed to the original in terms of interior.

Here are some shots of what the future looked like, through a 55 year old lens.

Approaching by cable car...

View from the top...

The tower in all its glory, together with...

A statue of a little extraterrestrial - supposedly left behind, still waiting for his parents to return.

Entry point into the 1973 UFO...

The lights - just like in 1973.

Well, I guess the bulbs have changed...

Some more.

The Avion bar, original furniture and all. The barman needed to be slender - there’s hardly any space behind the bar smile

The VIP dining room, with original furniture recently restored and returned.

Some more of the custom designed lamps, made especially for the hotel.

There’s even a drinking bowl for four legged friends in a matching design.

Unfortunately there are only a few rooms and if you want one with a bathroom (many still have communal bathrooms), booking well in advance is recommended.

At any rate, an interesting experience seeing how future was imagined back before one was born smile
