pplater initiates a compelling community experiment, challenging collectors to wear their smallest watch for a week. This thread explores how personal preferences for watch size evolve, influenced by fashion and individual collections. It encourages readers to reconsider their own perceptions of watch dimensions through a week-long immersion.

It's going to be a slow week, so how about a fun little experiment?

We're often reading posts and quotes about watch size (such as Mr Stern's quote brought to us by Stefan, below) and what has been very interesting is the range of views expressed in reply. What has been most  interesting is the 'shift' in views which may be detected in the replies from some posters over time!

It appears that many of us express a distinct preference, but frequently move beyond that preference (be it larger or smaller) in the pieces we collect or wear. Andrew, what became of that statistical study you started a couple of weeks ago? Recalculating for the Sub???  smile

The point of view which we express when these questions [frequently] arise is a point of view coloured by the fashion of the moment, or the present favourite watch in the collection. So, this is the proposal: spend this week wearing the smallest watch you own. It doesn't matter what that watch is or how long since it was last worn. It might be the case that you have only one watch, a 47mm Panerai that you wear every day. Wear that one. It may be that amongst the fifty watches you own you have a 30mm vintage Elgin that you haven't worn for two years. Wear that one.

Get used to it. See how it feels after a couple of hours; a day; a few days, then a week. Come back next weekend and let's see what we all think about watch sizes after we've had a decent exposure to a piece that either confirms our current preference (that Panerai!) or causes us to reflect on it from a little distance. It would be great to see them in the Friday Wristscan thread also!

How about it? Are you in? What have you got to lose? Unless something smaller turns up, expect to read about this one next week:

Cheers,

pplater.

If it's the smallest...

..in your watchbox, Quan, strap it on, leave it there, and tell us next week what you think about watch sizes! Cheers, pplater.

Youre perfectly right, pplater.

When I came back home with my latest addition, yesterday, my wife told me that it was much too small for me, and that I had to gift her. That 's the problem with this Pre Xmas era... More seriously, I epxerimented several times... In my collection, I have some very small watches like the JLC Mar V II Weems ( 32 or 33 mm ), or the Mark XI ( 35 mm ). I have no problem at all to wear them Although small, these are great watches. Best, and thanks for this topic, my friend. Nicolas

Glad you approve Nicolas...

So - which one in your phenomenal collection is the smallest, and will you wear it all week? Your thoughts at the end of a whole week would fill a book! Cheers, pplater.

My smallest?

Without doubt, this Mark V II Weems, which is only 33 mm, but you can easily get used to its size, due to its strength. I already wore it during a whole wee, and with a lot of pleasure. Well, there are chances I wear another small watch, my new 35 mm one, this week.... See you next firday! Best, Nicolas
