In a world where the allure of a luxury timepiece often dominates the conversation, cazalea's insightful post shifts focus to the often-overlooked 'external factors' that profoundly influence a watch purchase. His exploration challenges collectors to consider the holistic buying experience, from boutique ambiance to after-sales support, and how these elements can tip the scales for or against a coveted acquisition. This article delves into his personal reflections and the community's diverse perspectives on what truly drives a watch enthusiast's decision-making process beyond the watch itself.

This is highly personal, but I think worth considering — setting the actual watch aside for a moment, what other factors bring you to pull out your wallet (or walk away)?
  • Box & assorted items in the packaging (pushers, winder, books)
  • Boutique ambiance (furnishings, sales staff, limited editions, inventory)
  • Bracelet included and/or Extra straps, preferably quick-change
  • Brand ambassadors (beautiful or sporty)
  • Club membership
  • Discount
  • Extended warranty
  • Glass of champagne, whiskey, whatever offered
  • Guilt for wasting the staff’s time so often
  • Limited edition exclusivity
  • Opportunity to meet the watchmaker
  • Prestige of the brand
  • Step towards preferred customer status and another watch you really want
  • Trustworthy dealer / after sales support
  • Watchmaking class

Here’s a watch I bought completely on impulse - I’d never even seen one in the flesh and had no expectations when I walked into the store. One of 200 made, titanium and ceramic, specially-selected quartz crystal for accuracy, extra straps and buckles, curved to fit my wrist perfectly and by some good fortune my “salesman” was the owner’s son. He didn’t have to ask his manager to approve the substantial discount he offered off the marked price. Sold!

No, I never registered… and this is not exactly its number

Compare its side profile to the Urushi chronograph I was wearing that day (shown in my previous post).

Wonderful sparkle in the light

Even the gloss on the strap matches the sheen on the case.

PS the superb wrist fit & chameleon dial closed the deal for me.

Great purchase!

Congrats and nice pictures too (I recognized Vianney Halter and FP Journe, BTW). Unfortunately for me, what mainly drives me to purchase a watch is just the gut feeling that I need to buy something new; luckily money is always an object for me so damages are usually limited.

Thanks, of course money is usually a restraining factor

Most of my watch experiences seemed to be linked with food Or cars

External factors matter but to varying degrees….

That’s a beautiful Seiko, Mike. Congratulations. Bad after sale service is a showstopper for me. There are certain brands I no longer buy. Once burned, that’s the end. Feeling I can trust a sales outlet down the road…. if I have problems with the watch is of major importance. I have been disappointed more than once on this point. The term “reputable dealer” is highly questionable IMO. I have awful experiences with high praised ADs and second hand dealers. I don’t have a problem with people makin

Trust will be added to the list

Haha, thats a great idea, Mike. I will get a bottle tomorrow when I pass the shops. An Armagnag will have to do as the substitute tonight.

Enjoy your beautiful new timepiece. Its good to get something fresh in the collection now and then.

Trust is a good answer.

Although, having a trusted independent watchmaker who can service the watch is also very nice.
