Timeout's journey to acquire a custom Voutilainen GMT-6 offers a rare glimpse into the bespoke creation process with one of horology's most revered independent watchmakers. His detailed account highlights the meticulous adjustments and collaborative spirit involved in realizing a truly personalized timepiece. This article explores the nuances of custom watchmaking and the enduring appeal of Kari Voutilainen's artistry.

I came across this particular dial design a while back. Although I’m always impressed by the bright high contrast colors in Kari Voutilainen’s dials I feared that I may tire of something too bright in time. Once I let Kari know that the original had already been resold (A Collected Man) he agreed to replicate exactly. The wait (around 18 months from first meeting) was worth it. Kari was a pleasure to deal with - we went through 2 dial and 3 GMT disc fabrications before finalizing - nothing was too much trouble.
Key Points from the Discussion
- The original author, Timeout, meticulously documented the iterative design process, sharing images of earlier dial and GMT disc fabrications that were refined to achieve the desired proportions and aesthetic balance. This included adjusting the center disc size, baton hour marker length, and contrast between white gold and black enamel on the GMT disc.
- Kari Voutilainen offers an unparalleled 'whole package' experience, combining his renown as a dial and case maker with exceptional hand finishing, rarity, and the unique opportunity for direct interaction with a master watchmaker. This ensures customer satisfaction throughout the ownership journey.
- The final Voutilainen GMT-6 dial features slightly different proportions compared to most of Kari's other dials, specifically where the black guilloche meets the small seconds register. This subtle adjustment, intersecting just before the 15-second mark rather than after, was a deliberate design choice that Timeout felt enhanced the overall aesthetic of this particular watch.
- While Kari Voutilainen is known for vibrant, high-contrast dials, the discussion acknowledges that his capabilities allow for sophisticated and subtle designs, preventing an 'over the top' aesthetic in many examples.
- A contributor inquired about the meaning of the 'K' on the caseback, speculating if it stands for Kari, and also asked if the final product was identical to the original piece sold by A Collected Man.
- Another community member shared an image of a Kari Voutilainen dial integrated into a Grönefeld watch, showcasing the potential for cross-brand appreciation and the distinctiveness of Voutilainen's dial work.
