DonCorson's report from SIHH 2016 at the Carré des Horlogers spotlights Urwerk's latest innovations, including the EMC TimeHunter and the UR-105 T-Rex. This article delves into the technical advancements of the EMC, which now measures both rate and amplitude, and explores the distinctive design evolution of the UR-105. Readers gain insight into Urwerk's commitment to pushing horological boundaries with unique complications and aesthetics.

Starting out with the AHCI members at the Carré des Horlogers let's see the work of Felix Baumgartner and his brand Urwerk.  Urwerk presented a new version of their EMC watch which includes an internal rate and amplitude measuring system and a 105 with an interesting new case.

The EMC TimeHunter is the second iterration of the EMC and adds this time measurement of the not only the rate, but also the amplitude of the watch.  At the same time the design has become more wearable, it has become a watch and has no longer mainly the feeling of a measurement system.

As with the first version one starts the measurement by vigorously winding the grand to provide some power.  This done the watch can be placed in the position desired for the measurement and the button is pressed.  The measurement is made and first the rate is shown by a hand on a segment scale, then that same hand moves to a second segment scale indicating the amplitude.  A tiny LED indicates with red or green color if all is well or if adjustment needs to be made.  For inquisitive minds this is a fun and useful complication.

Indication the rate...

Indication the amplitude and, with the green LED, that all is well.

Note that the EMC is the first Urwerk watch that has real hands and needs no learning time to read it the first time.  In this second iteration the time reading is a snap, the dial and hand very clear unambiguous.  The case is available in silvery bead-blasted titanium or ceramic coated titanium green.

The UR105 TRex uses its the well known planetary display with the planets moving from east to west as the sun across the sky, and adds a feeling of prehistory with a case like a turtles shell or ur-reptile skin.  Fashioned in bronze the case feels good and will develop with wear.

Some Urwerk watches seen "in the wild" at the SIHH.

About the Urwerk Ref. UR-105

The Urwerk UR-105 reference represents a distinct evolution within the brand's "Knight" series, characterized by its unique "CT" (CollectoR) designation. This particular iteration offers a novel approach to displaying the intricate movement, allowing the wearer to selectively reveal or conceal the internal mechanics. This design choice distinguishes it from earlier UR-105 models, which either presented a fully open view or a more restricted display focused solely on the minute track, providing a balance between technical exhibition and visual discretion.

The UR-105 CT features a case crafted from titanium and PVD-coated steel, housing the UR 5.02 self-winding movement. The case measures 39.5 mm in width, 53 mm in length, and has a thickness of 17.3 mm. The movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, offering a clear view of the wandering hours display. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters.

This reference appeals to collectors who appreciate Urwerk's distinctive approach to time display and mechanical innovation, particularly those who value the option to control the visual presentation of the movement. The UR-105 CT fits into the brand's lineage as a refinement of the wandering hours concept, offering a more interactive experience compared to its predecessors. Its design emphasizes both the technical artistry and the wearer's engagement with the timepiece.

I\'m a big fan of Urwerk but not really impressed with this year\'s showing. I understand the EMC is sort of like Felix\'s pet project and they already knew it won\'t be a big seller. But the 105 T-Rex.....it is just a bit too wacky for me. I mean seriously, design watches after spaceship is cool, but after dinosaurs? Not sure about that. The market is down and it\'s obvious indies have to offer some lower priced pieces to stay afloat, but I\'m just not sure the 105s (and the variations) are a g
