I recently managed to acquire a watch which, for me, has been a truly exciting addition to my small collection. For a couple of years I have been looking for a Marine Nationale issued Tudor Submariner; I finally found it!!

A Tudor Submariner reference 94010, issued to SM Beveziers in 1981.

Unlike the British issue MiliSubs that were issued to individuals, the MN Subs were issued to boats and submarines. Mine was issued to Sous Marine Beveziers, a French Agosta class patrol submarine that launched in 1977. It carried a crew of 58, including 7 officers.

One of the trickier aspects of finding desirable examples of these watches is the issue of provenance. There are very few attributes of the MNs that differentiate them from civilian versions, so either extracts from the MN watchmakers' records or the original decommissioning papers are an essential part of the package. I was fortunate enough to acquire one with decom papers from 2003.

There are two dial/hand variations on the 94101 - snowflake and mercedes hands; having owned a few Tudor Subs my preference was to find an MN with Merc hands. It's an elegant combination with the triangle quarter markers. The hour markers on my example have developed a lovely deep patina!

The watch retains its 'matted' case sides.

And comes on its original NATO strap.

Here it is with its Snowflake brother.

Thanks to everybody who advised me on these, but special thanks goes to Jason G for helping me make it happen! ;-)

Thanks for reading!

About the Rolex Ref. 94010

The Rolex Submariner reference 94010 is a notable example from the brand's tool watch offerings, distinguished by its lack of a date complication and the presence of a rotating bezel. This particular reference is recognized for its clean dial aesthetic, often referred to as a "no-date" Submariner, which appeals to collectors who appreciate a symmetrical and uncluttered display. It represents a period in the Submariner's evolution where robust functionality was prioritized.

This reference features a stainless steel case, housing an automatic movement. The crystal protecting the dial is acrylic, a common material for watches of this era, known for its warmth and resistance to shattering, though more prone to scratching than sapphire. The case dimensions contribute to its wearability and presence on the wrist, consistent with its intended use as a robust timekeeping instrument.

For collectors, the 94010 holds interest due to its specific configuration and the variations found within the reference, such as different dial types. The beveled lugs, as noted in the collector's post, are a characteristic detail that adds to its vintage appeal. Its position within the broader Submariner lineage offers a distinct alternative to date-equipped models, making it a focus for those seeking specific design elements and historical context.

I can understand your love for these MNs...

Here is my Trio, well, should say was, as the 7016 has disappeared... 7924 / 7016 / 5513... All MNs: It doesn't matter the dial is snowflake, or diamond... The blue dials just rock! Congrats on your new catch, this is a superb and great one. Best, Nicolas
