Miles_151, a seasoned collector, shares his journey with the original Tudor Black Bay references, specifically the 79220 series. His perspective offers valuable insight into how these watches reignited his interest in Tudor and provided a refreshing collecting experience amidst the increasing difficulty of acquiring other luxury brands. This article explores the enduring appeal of the 79220 models and their place in a modern collection.
When Tudor launched the black bay in 2012 it pricked my interest in the brand having never really being a Tudor fan over the last 35 years of collecting.
I was a few years late coming to the party and bought my first Tudor the 79220n. I loved this watch and wore it often and loved its modern approach to a vintage problem.
With all the benefits of a modern watch with a node back to its history. The ETA movement and rose logo dial with the Smiley script all appealed to my taste.
Roll on nearly a decade and my interest in Tudor has continued. The timing for me was probably good as this was at a time when Rolex and Patek started to become so difficult to obtain. I was made to feel like I should be gifting my kidneys or some other vital organ to my AD as a thank you for the several hundred thousand pounds I’d spent with them. The feel with Tudor was completely different and reminded me of how it once was with both of my favourite watch houses.
It has taken me until now to find the original line up which I always wanted to do.
Future collectable or just great watches? Either way I really enjoy wearing these 79220’s
So here are my 79220r, 79220b and 79220n. Funny how they came to me in reverse order to how they were launched.
These watches ground me and remind me that you don’t have to wear the latest hyped watch to get a great deal of satisfaction on your wrist.
Happy Friday Amigos and hope you all have a great weekend.

About the Rolex Black Bay Ref. 79220R
The Tudor Black Bay reference 79220R, introduced in 2012, marked a significant re-entry for Tudor into the enthusiast market. Positioned as a modern dive watch with strong historical design cues, it drew inspiration from Tudor's rich diving watch heritage, particularly models from the 1950s and 1960s, while establishing a distinct identity separate from its sister brand.
This model features a 41mm stainless steel case, a unidirectional rotating bezel with a burgundy aluminum insert, and a domed sapphire crystal. It is powered by the ETA 2824 automatic movement, offering a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. The dial is black with gilt accents, featuring large luminous hour markers and the characteristic 'snowflake' hands. Water resistance is rated to 200 meters.
For collectors, the 79220R, along with its blue (79220B) and black (79220N) counterparts, represents the first generation of the modern Black Bay line. These early models are notable for their ETA movements, the 'smiley' self-winding text, and the Tudor rose logo on the dial, elements that were subsequently changed in later iterations. This combination of features makes them particularly appealing to those who appreciate the initial vision and early production characteristics of the Black Bay series.
