Lankysudanese shares a common frustration among luxury watch owners: a Rolex GMT-Master II 'Batman' failing to meet its advertised 'Superlative Chronometer' accuracy after a factory service. This post delves into the real-world expectations versus marketing claims for watch accuracy, sparking a community discussion on the practicalities of horological precision and the emotional connection to a timepiece.

This is a rant, so please feel free to ignore if (like most of us) you are here for some positive post-COVID-lockdown news.

I just received my first generation batman after I had sent it to geneva headquarters >4months ago for superlative regulation. And how did it perform after the first full wind after coming back from Geneva HQ service? Plus 3.86s/day!!!

Obviously, a large part of the delay was Bc of the COVID-19 shutdown. I’d sent it in because the local Rolex service center was unable to regulate it to the ‘advertised’ plus/minus 2s/day, after I’d given them two cracks at the task.

The watch is beautiful and i purchased it to commemorate the birth of my firstborn, and I’ve missed it as hell during these 4 months. So, in spite of me being a stickler for rate accuracy and isochronism, I don’t plan to part with it for another decade.

I am disappointed. When it was purchased, it ran plus 1.5s/day for 2yrs plus

About the Rolex Rolex 116710 BLNR Ref. 116710

The Rolex GMT-Master II reference 116710BLNR, known by collectors as the "Batman," introduced a novel blue and black ceramic bezel to the GMT-Master II lineup. This was the first time Rolex combined two distinct colors on a single monobloc Cerachrom bezel, a significant technical achievement. The blue segment represents daylight hours, while the black segment denotes nighttime, aiding in tracking a second or third time zone.

This reference features a 40mm Oystersteel case, housing the automatic Caliber 3186 movement, which provides a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens over the date display and is water-resistant to 100 meters. The black dial provides a contrasting backdrop for the Chromalight hour markers and hands.

Appealing to collectors interested in modern Rolex innovations and practical travel watches, the 116710BLNR quickly became a highly sought-after model. Its distinctive bezel color combination set it apart from previous GMT-Master II references and established a new aesthetic within the collection, preceding subsequent iterations with similar two-tone ceramic bezels.

A few thoughts..

First, very nice watch. I am not a Rolex guy, but the “Batman” is one of the few I find pleasing. That being said, perhaps it just needs to settle in a bit? Also, it is my understanding that watches tend to run fast as the mainspring is nearer to the end; and that automatic watches keep the best time when the mainspring stays almost fully wound. Perhaps, if you have been less active lately, the watch isn’t staying as fully wound as normal and is running a second or two per day out of spec? And a

The real question is..

Why did you buy a Rolex? If it was to own a Rolex who cares about 3.5 seconds a day...if it was to own a consistent timepiece there are other brands in the category that have IMO better movements.

I'm no spring chicken 😁; let's hear your suggestions for water-resistant shock-resistant good-looking accurate iconic timepieces in that price category. I considered them all when I made the final decision to buy a Rolex.

It checked all the boxes; it just so happens that now one of the boxes got unchecked. Thanks for your response
