Aquaracer1's hands-on review of the Rolex Explorer I 124270 sparks a crucial discussion for collectors considering this reference. His detailed observations, particularly concerning the 36mm case thickness, provide invaluable real-world context often missing from official specifications. This article synthesizes community insights to help prospective owners understand the nuances of its wearability and design.

Hope all is well friends! In the past I owned the 39 mm version of this watch but found it wore too large for my wrist, especially the lug to lug. Today I saw the 36 mm Explorer I 124270 in the metal for the first time. Initial impressions are strong. My biggest concern is case thickness at 11.5 mm on a 36 mm watch. Based on my pics, do you guys think it wears too tall? Also, if there are any members who are owners, Iโ€™d love to hear what you like and what you dislike (if anything). Thanks for sharing your opinions! ๐Ÿป

About the Rolex Rolex Explorer Ref. 124270

The Explorer 124270, introduced in 2021, marks a return to the 36mm case size for the model line, a dimension historically associated with the Explorer. This reference updates the previous 39mm iteration, offering a more compact wearing experience while retaining the core aesthetic of the tool watch. It features a black dial with the characteristic 3-6-9 Arabic numerals and baton markers, all filled with Chromalight for legibility in low light conditions.

This reference is housed in an Oystersteel case measuring 36mm in diameter and approximately 11.5mm in thickness. It is fitted with a fixed smooth bezel and a sapphire crystal. The watch is powered by the automatic Caliber 3230, a movement known for its precision and a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. Water resistance is rated to 100 meters, ensuring durability for daily wear.

The 124270 appeals to collectors who appreciate the traditional proportions of the Explorer and prefer a smaller case size. Its reintroduction of the 36mm diameter aligns with a broader trend towards more classic watch dimensions. This reference is offered exclusively on an Oyster bracelet, maintaining a consistent and robust presentation within the collection.

36mm wears extremely wellโ€ฆ Iโ€™d say go for it. Itโ€™s a rugged sports watch so the thickness is part of itโ€™s character (charm

But here's my question for you Jesse: what does it give you that you don't already have with the Laureato?

As I am contemplating that same question! Initially, I thought, not much, except it says Rolex on the dial and the dial is black instead of blue (with no date ๐Ÿ˜‰). But a deeper examination reveals that there may be a Sports Rolex hole in my line-up now that the Sub is sold. No I donโ€™t want another Sub. But an iconic black dialed Rolex sports watch, with a beautiful, classic, comfortable and solid bracelet - That fits me much better than the Sub - And that is the reason for my consideration ๐Ÿ™‚ Very

Of course I am biased and absolutely adore my 114270. Size is perfect, discreet, comfortable, rather cool, and thickness I think suits it proportionately well. Just a nice little package wrapped around one's wrist!

Per my pics, do you think it wears too tall?
