Andrew (219) offers an exclusive look at the Richard Mille RM056-01, a watch that pushes the boundaries of horological transparency. His detailed report, following a visit to the crystal manufacturing firm Stettler, highlights the immense technical challenges involved in crafting a watch almost entirely from sapphire. This article provides a rare glimpse into the innovative spirit driving Richard Mille's most ambitious creations.
The Richard Mille RM056-01 represents a significant advancement in the brand's use of sapphire in watchmaking, following the original RM056. This model distinguishes itself by extending the use of transparent sapphire beyond the case to include the baseplate and bridges of the movement. This design choice highlights the intricate mechanics of the caliber, making every component visible to the observer.
The case of the RM056-01 is crafted from solid blocks of sapphire, a material known for its extreme hardness and scratch resistance, requiring specialized ultrasonic machining and polishing techniques. The movement, a manual-winding tourbillon caliber, is specifically designed to integrate with the transparent components, showcasing its architectural complexity. The watch maintains a high level of finishing on all visible parts, a necessity given the transparent construction.
For collectors, the RM056-01 is notable for its technical innovation and extreme exclusivity. Its production demands a highly specialized manufacturing process, resulting in very limited availability. This reference is considered a pinnacle of Richard Mille's experimental approach to materials and transparency, appealing to those who value cutting-edge horological engineering and a distinctive aesthetic.
that is simply stunning!! Any idea if the 'new' owners also have the 'older' RM56?
.... does it break into pieces? Or is it treated as glass can be. I was wondering also about the weight, is it heavy, light, comparing to a RM002, as it seems a variant of it. Give us the price, just for the peace of mind :) Thanks for the great pics!
First, thank you Andrew for this overall opinion and description about this UFO in the watch industry. Last year, in spite of the fact I realized the work was a tough endeavour, I wasn't "entranced" by the 56. Now, this year with the 56-1, I feel much more interested. I think the sapphire plate and bridges are deeply modifying the watch, but I also think that downsizing the complications from Split+Tourbillon too Tourbillon only makes it much more homogene and balanced. Congratulations to the ne
Simply amazing! I wonder if RM will venture into a colored sapphire crystal as well if indeed there is another next generation...56-02?
