Author '219' offers an exclusive report from Richard Mille's private showing of new models at the Plaza Athenee in Paris, bypassing the traditional Geneva and Basel fairs. The highlight is the RM018, described as the pinnacle of Richard Mille's achievements, showcasing a new movement with integrated semi-precious stones and a 'free-hanging' skeleton design.

Rather than join the madding crowd at either Geneva or Basel, Richard Mille stayed close to home (literally) and held the showing of new models this year at the Plaza Athenee on Avenue Montaigne in Paris. Paris in the spring has its own charm – the blossom on the trees, the hint of warmth in the sun, the lengthening days and a general ‘joie de vie’ returns to the daily ethos. It was with such optimism that we boarded the Eurostar and sojourned a Paris to see what new wonders were in store for us from Richard Mille this year.

Hosted generously by Richard Mille EME (Europe / Middle East), we were treated to a wonderful spring lunch at Alain Ducasse, and a private viewing of the models in the pipeline (as well as the press material for this years new models). On show, and definitely the star of the event, was the prototype for the RM018. I have argued before, and will do so again, that this watch is the very zenith of what Richard Mille can achieve. A new movement, the integration of semi precious stones into the gear train of the watch, and all achieved with a skeleton movement that appears to ‘hang free’ in the case.

About the Richard Mille Tourbillon Baguette Ref. RM018

Richard Mille RM 018 Tourbillon Baguette

The RM 018 represents Richard Mille's approach to the tourbillon complication within their numbered series lineup. Distinguished by its gem-set dial configuration, this reference occupied a specific position in the brand's catalog during its production period from 2006 to 2012.

The 39mm case is constructed from 18k rose gold with a fixed bezel and sapphire crystal providing 50-meter water resistance. The manual-winding RM018 caliber powers the timepiece, delivering a 70-hour power reserve. The gem-set dial creates the primary visual distinction for this reference.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking Richard Mille's interpretation of traditional haute horlogerie complications with contemporary materials. The combination of precious metal case construction, gem-set dial treatment, and manual tourbillon movement positions the RM 018 within the brand's luxury segment. Production ceased in 2012, establishing a defined collecting window for this reference.

The Watches: RM018 Hommage a Boucheron

If you are looking for someone to ‘mess’ with the architecture of the watch, and what is possible with it, the new engineering and techniques that might be required, then Richard Mille is your man. We have all (perhaps) become too complacent about what to expect from Richard Mille. We have all become accepting that he will produce something each time to blow our collective minds away. And hence, perhaps we have been a little quiet on what this year has brought. I will add myself into this catego

Thanks for sharing...

the RM 18 certainly begs to be seen in the metal!! Can't wait to see the rest of the collection. As per RM standard, the lunch and presentation looked superb. Thanks again for sharing!!

I desperately want to see the RM018 in person

While I've always appreciated other Richard Mille watches, the RM018 is THE RM I most wish to see and hold.  The way RM has used wafer-thin semi-precious stones in this movement is so intriguing and aesthetically pleasing.  I most want to see the lapis lazuli version in the flesh. Thanks for the great report, Andrew! Cheers, Daos

good in several ways

The watch looks great! I'm interested in seeing what it looks like with turquoise or with lapis. But, what is especially good is reading that the prototype is not ready because it is being tested. I like to hear that Richard Mille is holding up introducing a watch, so that more testing can be done. Eric von Schonberg

Thanks Eric - hope to bring you more on this watch when other

versions are finally released (not sure when that would be). But the lapis version will be something special I feel - with the white metal elements and a dark blue croco strap.... If only it could be mine! Thanks Andrew H
