Author '219' offers an exclusive report from Richard Mille's private showing of new models at the Plaza Athenee in Paris, bypassing the traditional Geneva and Basel fairs. Rather than join the madding crowd at either Geneva or Basel, Richard Mille stayed close to home (literally) and held the showing of new models this year at the Plaza Athenee on Avenue Montaigne in Paris. Paris in the spring has its own charm – the blossom on the trees, the hint of warmth in the sun, the lengthening days and a general ‘joie de vie’ returns to the daily ethos. It was with such optimism that we boarded the Eurostar and sojourned a Paris to see what new wonders were in store for us from Richard Mille this year.
Hosted generously by Richard Mille EME (Europe / Middle East), we were treated to a wonderful spring lunch at Alain Ducasse, and a private viewing of the models in the pipeline (as well as the press material for this years new models). On show, and definitely the star of the event, was the prototype for the RM018. I have argued before, and will do so again, that this watch is the very zenith of what Richard Mille can achieve. A new movement, the integration of semi precious stones into the gear train of the watch, and all achieved with a skeleton movement that appears to ‘hang free’ in the case.

Richard Mille RM 018 Tourbillon Baguette
The RM 018 represents Richard Mille's approach to the tourbillon complication within their numbered series lineup. Distinguished by its gem-set dial configuration, this reference occupied a specific position in the brand's catalog during its production period from 2006 to 2012.

There were other watches on display. Not least of which was the RM020. I had some sympathy for this when it was released, and with sufficient funds, might even have been tempted. As my eye sight gets worse with the years, the thought of a modern pocket watch to sit either on the desk, or in the pocket, is something that appeals. In the flesh, the working model does not disappoint (although a larger balance wheel would have been aesthetically appreciated). And finally, a new case coating material
with its different "look" since it seems to be much more dressy. I don't know if I like this dressy look yet since I'm too accustomed to seeing the high tech F1 styling. It'll take some time for me to get used to this look. Strap on the RM18 looks amazing too. Cheers, Anthony
Paris Plaza Athenee Alain Ducasse RM and his new RM018 What an occassion and a privilege! The best of the best and IMO RM has done it again! Will need time for it to sink in and hopefully to see it in the metal in order to fully appreciate and assess this new wonder from RM (RM018). Cheers Fernando
