Unless if the individual had some dramatic falling out, post-ambassadorship, then wearing a piece given to them is free advertising to the brand. Probably then in the interest of giving them a watch.

I can imagine the pit crew staff who wear RM’s during races are not given but rather “issued” at the beginning of a season.

There are examples from multiple sports, from tennis players, runners, and if I'm not mistaken even a football player...for once I think these are partnerships that makes sense, for a brand whose image is about sports watches with extreme performances.

I'd love to be sponsored by them when I teach algebra, but I guess they don't consider it exciting enough! ;-))

Football players are not allowed to wear watches on the field

I think it was mentioned by Richard Mille himself why he would not put money in football or basketball sponsorship - players cannot wear watches on the field, which is different than e.g. tennis players.

No doubt that it's forbidden, I used to be a soccer ref in Italy and it's even forbidden (for the players) to wear a watch during soccer! ;-) But here's the NFL player that I remember attracted attention, though I assume he wasn't sponsored by RM:
