On 08-May-2023 at approximately 6:15PM, multiple criminals made their way into the Quark 888 Jewelry Store in Ginza district, Tokyo, during broad daylight.  Ginza is known to be the main luxury shopping area of Tokyo, synonymous with Bond Street and Fifth Avenue.  The criminals threatened store employees and patrons with a knife, although no serious injuries are reported.  The thieves stole dozens of watches (reports vary in number from 30 to 100), presumably pre-owned pieces as Quark is known to carry mostly pre-owned watches including vintage Rolexes.

Video recording of the robbery was captured by bystanders and broadcasted on social media.  It shows multiple suspects wearing plastic masks that seem to be unhurried and inexperienced at crime.

An estimated value of over 100 million yen was taken (approximately $750,000 US dollars) by the thieves who fled in a white Toyota Alphard van.  The van is believed to have a getaway driver and likely another accomplice.

Police later found some of the criminals in Akasaka district, a government district of Tokyo.  As of this release, four suspects are in custody.  The four suspects are all teenagers from Yokohama (a city nearby Tokyo) and range from 16 years old to 19 years old.  The sixteen year old will have his identity withheld, to facilitate his rehabilitation, as per Japanese law.

It is understood that the criminals abandoned the getaway van in the Akasaka district, where police were able to locate some of the criminals who seemed to have trespassed into a residential apartment building.  It is believed that some of the watches seem to have been recovered.

Japan is a country known to have some of the lowest crime in the world.  However, Ginza, the most upscale shopping district in Tokyo (and among the most upscale in the world), has not been spared of crime.  A couple years ago a significant ruby was stolen in Ginza.  In addition to this incident, there have been jewelry heists in 2014, and a famous 2007 robbery where the Pink Panther gang stole jewels and got away on bicycles.

Bystanders and local residents are shocked about the recent robbery.

There are two KOBAN Police Boxes nearby the Quark 888 Jewelry store, one near Shimbashi and one on the Ginza strip, both are about 400-500 meters away from Quark.

Special thanks to Olivier, for informing me of this situation!  I totally did not know.

You'll notice that the suspects seem to be moving slowly and indecisively suggesting the robbery was not rehearsed and the robbers were inexperienced.  A woman bystander, possibly annoyed by the loud alarm siren, closes the door twice while the thieves are still inside the store.

Noise pollution is never desirable!

Good of the woman to close the door twice to reduce the noise

I don't know about that!

They're armed with crowbars and knives. A crowbar can be very painful! Although they don't seem to know how to use the crowbar exceptionally well.

I feel safe with you! Nobody messes with you!

And yes, you're right, after looking at the video again and noticing how badly coordinated they are and realizing they're 16 to 19 year old boys, children essentially, I think you're right. You'd be able to take the lot! Frankly, I don't think they can even see well out of their masks. They look so clumsy.
