Rhyzen's original post challenges the notion that manual-wind perpetual calendars are inherently flawed, sparking a rich discussion among collectors. By showcasing a stunning A. Lange & Sƶhne Datograph Perpetual, Rhyzen invites the WatchProSite community to weigh in on the practicality versus the romance of hand-wound perpetual calendars. This article synthesizes the diverse perspectives, offering valuable insights into a long-standing horological debate.

I chanced upon an interesting article the other day, about hand-winding perpetual calendars being "deeply flawed" and a "mistake".  This was attributed to the "hassle" of hand-winding, and the pain of date setting when the movement stops running.  It was argued that for practicality, a perpetual calendar needs an automatic movement.

Personally, I couldn't disagree more.  Especially when I flip this one over.  In fact, I wish my other QPs are manual winders.

I wonder what are your thoughts on this?

Read the same article. I guess there’s a ā€œmindā€ and ā€œheartā€ to that topic. The ā€œmindā€ would agree that automatic movement is practical and logical. The ā€œheartā€ would respond differently. There’s a certain romance with manual winding perpetual calendar watches and that’s where I am leaning too. Can’t take that away and that’s why we are in this hobby.

How may perpetuals do you own and do you wind them every day?

There are no perpetual calendars in my collection. I owned one once (a Blancpain) but it didn't last long in my collection. To me the magic of a perpetual calendar is the fact that, so long as you keep it running, it just automatically, on its own, without your input, tells you the correct time and date every day forever. That's so cool! If it's an automatic, you keep it running by wearing every day or every other day. If it's a manual, you keep it running by winding it every day or every other

For hassle-free experience, there is Apple watch! šŸ˜„ In fact, I see these so-called "hassles" as part of old-time "charm". And, especially for Langes, which are objects of art, I'm more than willing to endure such "hassles".

The vast majority of watch collectors want manual wind - but maybe not for the reason why most people think. Most people think that serious collectors enjoy the ritual of winding watches. But that has actually transitioned in the past several years to watch collectors don't especially enjoy winding their watches, but they do especially enjoy the view a manual wind gives of the movement. So... The question now became... How can we satisfy the practicality of an automatic and give watch collectors

As watch geeks surely we shouldn’t mind the opportunity to interact more with our watches, and therefore having a manual is an advantage?! Beautiful Lange! All the best, Jon
