Reuven Malter's post delves into the nuanced world of strap selection for a Patek Philippe, a decision that significantly impacts a watch's aesthetic and wearability. His dilemma highlights how even a high-quality, custom-made strap might not perfectly complement a luxury timepiece, prompting a community discussion on color, texture, and scale. This exploration is crucial for collectors seeking to personalize their watches while maintaining their inherent elegance.
I just got this very nice strap. On top you see the oem Patek strap (worn 4 years) and below you see an alligator strap with a stamp from a well known german retailer made by my favorite strap maker. It costs almost one ninth (!) of the oem strap which is amazing given the obvious quality. However, the color has to fit the watch and now i am thinking about sending the watch eeeh i mean strap back.
What should i do?
Key Points from the Discussion
- The matte finish and larger scales of a chocolate-colored strap are often preferred for their versatility and ability to complement the watch head more effectively than glossy, smaller-scaled alternatives.
- Many collectors prefer the original OEM Patek Philippe straps, favoring their subtle large-scale matte appearance which allows the watch itself to remain the prominent feature.
- The perceived value of a high-quality alligator strap at a fraction of the OEM price raises questions about its true quality and craftsmanship, as such a significant discount can be uncommon.
- Even with a specific aesthetic goal in mind, the final look of a strap on a watch can sometimes be unexpectedly disappointing, leading to a reevaluation of the choice.
