Halgedahl's discovery of the Patek Philippe Ref. 5489 Gondolo Trapeze highlights how even seasoned collectors can uncover hidden gems within a brand's extensive catalog. This thread explores the unique appeal of this dress watch, prompting a discussion on its distinctive design and wearability. Readers gain insight into why this reference, often overlooked, resonates with those seeking something beyond the conventional round case.

The Patek Philippe reference 5489, known as the 'Trapèze', is a distinctive model characterized by its unique trapezoidal case shape. This reference stands apart from more conventional Patek Philippe designs, offering a sculptural and architectural aesthetic that appeals to collectors seeking unconventional forms within the brand's extensive catalog. The 'Trapèze' designation highlights its most defining visual characteristic, setting it apart from other shaped watches in the Patek Philippe collection. The reference 5489R-001 specifically denotes a rose gold variant of this model.
While specific dimensions for the 5489 are not widely publicized, the case material for the 5489R-001 is rose gold. The watch is understood to house a mechanical movement, consistent with Patek Philippe's manufacturing traditions. The crystal protecting the dial is typically sapphire, a standard for high-end watchmaking, ensuring durability and clarity. The design emphasizes the case's geometry, with the dial conforming to the trapezoidal outline.
The Patek Philippe ref. 5489 'Trapèze' appeals to collectors interested in the brand's less common and more design-forward creations. Its limited visibility in the market and unique form factor contribute to its allure among enthusiasts who appreciate Patek Philippe's ventures beyond traditional round or rectangular cases. The existence of variants, such as the rose gold 5489R-001, further illustrates the model's subtle diversification within its niche.
I like the shape, size, dial decoration and the solid case back. It is right up my street! For me it would have to be the RG version.
Very simple, non assuming. It was relatively inexpensive at the time. I witnessed an acquaintance procure one from a Patek Philippe dealer; it was going to be a gift for a friend of his. Has a round movement, Caliber 215. I personally prefer a Patek 5124 in yellow gold or in white gold with the salmon dial. But that's just me.
Suits you very well!
Great piece. You don’t see interesting case design all that often from modern watches and so this one called to me as soon as I saw it. I wear it both as a dress watch and casually.
Definitely was a negotiable piece at the time.
Reminds me of Gilbert Albert designs. Very nice photo!
