Emmanuel, known as quattro, presents an exceptional Patek Philippe Ref. 2442, a timepiece celebrated for its distinctive shaped case and various evocative nicknames. This article delves into quattro's appreciation for a particularly rare example, highlighting its unique patinated dial and long signature, and explores the community's shared insights on this iconic reference.

Nicknamed “Banana”, “Marylin”, "Osso da morto" (Italian for “dead man's bone”) or, in Japan, “Mimitabu” (耳朶, Japanese for “earlobe”), ref. 2442, introduced in 1948, is one of  Patek Philippe's most iconic shaped watches.

As its total production number is estimated at around 150 examples, it is rare.

But what is even rarer is to find such a stunning example with an incredibly appealing patinated dial bearing a long signature.

I'm in love: what about you?

Best, Emmanuel

About the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 2442

The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 2442, introduced in 1948, is a notable example of a shaped watch within the Calatrava line, distinguished by its elongated, curved case design. This reference is known by several collector nicknames such as “Banana” and “Mimitabu,” reflecting its distinctive form. Its production numbers are estimated to be limited, contributing to its rarity and appeal among collectors of vintage Patek Philippe timepieces.

This particular reference was produced in rose gold, with case dimensions of 27 x 42.5 mm. The watch typically features a manual-wind movement, consistent with Patek Philippe's manufacturing practices for dress watches of this era. The crystal would have been a period-appropriate material, likely acrylic, protecting a dial that often developed appealing patinas over time.

Reference 2442 holds a significant place for collectors interested in Patek Philippe's mid-century design evolution and the brand's exploration of non-circular case forms. Its scarcity and unique aesthetic make it a sought-after piece, particularly examples with well-preserved dials and cases. It represents a specific design language from a pivotal period in the brand's history.

The case is like a molten sculpture on the wrist Another spectacular piece Case design by markowski I think Julian Ps I reckon a pink gold model with a perfect dial would be more expensive

On this rose gold example, the printing looks manky but I could do with it personally. I love this patinated dial and long signature: I’ve seen no other example like this. Have a great weekend, Best, Emmanuel

This is what deeply annoys me about vintage: you have to be constantly on your guard and you can't have any confidence, even in seemingly reputable dealers like Epsadim.
