Epilogue's acquisition of the Patek Philippe Ref. 7234G Pilot Travel Time marks a significant milestone for any collector: their first Patek. His detailed observations on its unique aesthetic, the 'poesie' of its GMT complication, and the distinct character of its white gold case offer a fresh perspective on a reference that often sparks lively debate among enthusiasts. This article delves into Epilogue's initial impressions and the community's insights, exploring what makes this particular Patek Philippe a compelling choice.

Here it is - the first ever Patek to enter my watch box. A pilot watch reference 7234G.

Apart from the case, I can't yet feel the DNA passed down from its 1930s ancestors but still, the piece is striking. It retains the obvious look of a pilot's watch (including some of the best lume I've seen so far) but with the added poesie of the GMT hand and the double day/night indicators. These are a lot of fun to track though sadly do not account for seasonal change. So it's a GMT with a twist, a pilot's with a twist and a Patek with a twist. At 37.5mm in width, to which you add the pushers on either side, it's the right size and is aesthetically pleasing to me.

Taking a step back, it's definitevly a proud moment. The first Patek is like the first Ferrari (I think? If you're a petrol head, let me know!). So there’s a huge sense of excitement discovering what is Patek for the first time.

I notice in particular the golden hue of the white gold case. I notice the poetry of the movement compared to my Lange. I feel it has a soul and a unique horological expression. The font of the PATEK PHILIPPE is also imposing and it feels like the Sterns are reminding me to treat their watch respectfully!

In any case, I'm ready to discover more pieces from this manufacture even though I still hesitate about the number of "P"s in Patek Philippe! A next potential target is the Regulator 5235G which would complement the Pilot very very well. Simple but with a twist, Patek but with a twist!

Thanks for reading,

Hugo

Not only pictures

Good information about the reference too. I have the requirement that with my big wrist a little watch looks silly. So i go not smaller than 39mm. I know from myself that for me the Aquanaut is the best Patek. In your 7234G at the back, i recognize some of my RT Airspeed at the back.

Blue

Magic blue. No joke, normal blue. It is no Patek you can see. It have a Sellita movement, and i wear it at work where iron storage devices, dust, wood, concrete is more than a silent bush or terrace in a petit village. Better said, no place for a Omega, Patek, UN, AP etc.
