Elegance is of course in the eye of the beholder. For some, watches with multiple complications constitute a form of elegance. For others, elegance means a somewhat minimalist dress-watch, now somewhat back in fashion. For all of us, I imagine there can be dreams (and for the fortunate very few the reality) of a watch that somehow combines these features, such as a fine minute repeater. But in the world more of us inhabit, where, say, we can afford only a single Patek, or perhaps two, and where cost is a factor, I would make an argument for the 3960. To be sure, the Platinum and even white gold versions of this watch now command very high prices. But by Patek standards, the yellow gold model is accessible.

The watch is not the easiest to photograph, because in many ways it is the sum of the whole, including the exact proportions of thickness to diameter, and the porcelain dial, and the subtle hinges and lip for opening the case, that create the effect of the whole. My shots, below are not, sadly, fine photos - for one thing, they exaggerate the size of the watch, (the second photo is somewhat less misleading) and the overhang of the lugs is not how the watch usually sits on the wrist.  But I hope they are enough to suggest why, for example, the President of Patek USA chose this watch to wear at a gathering of aficionados, many of whom were naturally wearing far more costly Pateks. In my own case, it has been quite a long journey of living with watches that had their own elegance (examples - the Breguet 5177, the De Bethune DB2) and that were not necessarily at vastly different price points than the 3960, before arriving at this piece. But with this Patek, I have that rare feeling that while of course there are watches that make louder "statements" and better match contemporary tastes for larger timepieces, the 3960 embodies true elegance, such that I would not be shy about wearing it in any company at all. Always difficulty to predict, but instinctively and intuitively, I believe the watch will be with me throughout my life.

What is elegance in a wrist watch for you?

About the Breguet Classique Ref. 5177

The Breguet Classique reference 5177 represents an automatic entry within the Classique collection, distinguished by its 38mm case proportions and rose gold construction. This reference utilizes automatic movement technology within the traditional Classique aesthetic framework.

The 38mm case is crafted from 18k rose gold and houses an automatic movement. The silver dial provides contrast against the warm gold case material. Sapphire crystal protects the dial surface, while the watch maintains 30 meters of water resistance. The bezel design remains fixed in position.

Reference 5177 appeals to collectors seeking automatic movement functionality within traditional dress watch proportions. The 38mm case size positions this reference for those preferring mid-sized case dimensions, while the rose gold construction and silver dial combination offers specific aesthetic preferences within the broader Classique automatic range.

"Elegance is in the eye of the beholder"

True. For me I would try not to confuse "elegance " and "classicism". I'm not a classic Patek afiscionados and the most elegant Patek is for me the 5711. Style, discretion, thinness... some ingredient I would put in "elegance". Your watch is of course a fantastic and elegant Patek too. You're a lucky owner and wear it in the best of health. Cheers, Mark

Sleepless nights ...

you canΒ΄t imagine how many I had because of this watch. First when it was introduced in 1989 ... non was available for me ... hunting a G version for several years ... non was available for me ... only two or three years ago a few G pieces have been available for me, BUT the magic was gone. Not because of the still beautyful details of the watch, but maybe I hunted it for too long and the diameter (a tight to small for my current taste) of 33mm was something I displaced while dreaming.
