Gary_g's 4000th forum post offers a timely reflection on his 2024 collecting journey, providing a valuable blueprint for refining one's horological focus. His commitment to a curated collection of Patek Philippe, Rolex, and F.P. Journe timepieces sparks a broader discussion on the evolving philosophies that shape a collector's path. This article distills community insights on navigating brand loyalty, practical considerations, and the emotional connection to luxury watches.

I wanted to reflect on my 2024 collecting journey.

I was so fortunate to get two watches this year.
Both I love and they fit into a commitment I made to myself to narrow my collecting focus to three brands (I know some of you will disagree with that philosophy or my choices, but nevertheless) - Rolex, Patek and FPJ. So between 2020-2021 I sold all other brands’ watches (unless a watch had a special sentimental value). And I never looked back.

These are the two I was extremely fortunate to get this year:

I would love to hear others’ thoughts on their collecting philosophy. The nice thing about this hobby is that one can always change their mind!

I’ve gone through a lot of brands through my years of collecting. And the one watch I avoided at all costs in my early years of collecting is the one I now appreciate the most, Rolex. That and buy what you love is the other thing I learned throughout the years. So you seem to be doing it right. Merry Xmas and Happy Holidays!

Carrier, IWC, chopard, UN, just to name a few. But I don’t regret parting with them. I loved wearing them… and then I didn’t so it was time to go.

It sounds like you have tried a lot and have found out what you like. Every level of the journey has it’s logic. To me, it was very rewarding to go deeper in to some brands (several hehehe). I now much prefer it to diversification which was the philosophy i followed for many years….but everyone must find his own path. If your philosophy will take a new approach down the line, who knows? But it certainly sounds like you’re on a great path. Good luck and thanks for sharing your experience with us
