About the Patek Philippe Chronograph Ref. 5170

The Chronograph reference 5170, introduced in 2010, marked a significant development for Patek Philippe as it was the first serially produced chronograph to feature a fully in-house manufactured movement. This reference succeeded the reference 5070, transitioning from a Lemania-based caliber to a proprietary design, underscoring the brand's commitment to integrated manufacturing for its complications. It represents a modern interpretation of a classic chronograph layout within the Patek Philippe catalog.

The reference 5170 features a case measuring 39.4 mm in diameter and 10.9 mm in thickness, available in 18k white, rose, or yellow gold. It is equipped with the manual-winding caliber CH 29-535 PS, which offers a power reserve of 65 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal and is water-resistant to 30 meters. The movement is visible through a sapphire case back, showcasing its intricate finishing.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking a contemporary Patek Philippe chronograph with an in-house movement. Early variants, such as the yellow gold reference 5170J-001, featured a pulsometer scale, which was later replaced by a minute track on subsequent iterations. The various metal options and dial configurations provide distinct aesthetic choices for collectors, reflecting different periods of its production run.

Patek Philippe 5170J, the new instant classic!

You've already seen the 5170J last week but this time I can share some live pics. As always the BaselWorld conditions are not ideal for pics, still I hope you'll find the watch appealing. Once again the Patek Philippe star is an understated beauty. The beauty of simple things If the design is a classic the proportions are quite modern and really appealing. You will also notice the bezel that will remind you the 5396. The chronograph that asks you to listen to your body The choice of a pulsometre

5170J and 5205 have renewed my faith

in the Thierry era... I can't say I want to own either piece, but I see Real Pateks here. IMHO!

To me, it looks like vintage watch in a modern body.....

I'm not feeling it. It's neither here nor here. Maybe the white metal or RG version with a different dial may help. But right now, I rather have a true vintage. 5950A is GORGEOUS in real pictures. Thank you Jerome. *CL

I hear you, CL

I think your comments must be part of why I feel no blinding urge to buy, or reserve an example--or even feel big excitement about the color variations (although, I must admit, when this dial gets Arabic numerals, probably on the pt version... it will become hard to resist!) But either way, there is something sort of ho-hum about it in its current metal and dial, yet I still recognize Something Promising here... and finally, (again) the bezel 'frightens' me--it seems like the 5296, breathe on it

Arabic numerals with leaf hands....

and more subtle case....it will be heaven. Again, I love the different color on the second hands, nice touch *CL
