Patek_3944 makes a compelling case for the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 5107/5127 as the most beautiful modern Calatrava, a piece he believes is unfortunately overlooked in Patek's history. His detailed comparison with other references like the 5296 and 5227, coupled with personal ownership experience, offers a unique perspective on what defines the 'perfect' modern dress watch from the esteemed manufacture. This article invites readers to reconsider the enduring appeal and ideal sizing of these specific Calatrava models.

Hello Patek Punters,
I am writing this article as we await a new replacement to the bread and butter Patek 5296 Calatrava.

Patek ditched the 5296 in 2019 BaselWorld....... but what replaces it?
The 5196 remains the entry position, manual wind with no display back.
The 5227 is too expensive with the COMMISSIONED OFFICER caseback back..... (commissioned officers only please)
The 5296 was the perfect reitrement watch for SL driving Dentists and Corporte Lawyers with air cooled Porsche 911s.

The most beautiful modern Patek of current times......
Well it was the 5127..... or beit the 5107 original.

It started life as the 5107 - hailed by Nick Falukes as the most beautiful.  Please refer to Patek Magazine for the reference.
It featured year 2000 crown guards!!!!  These were also in the legendary 5110, 5134 and 5125 (annual calendar in limited production).

The 5107 became the 5127 - only the bezel was really different.

Early 5127 pieces featured the same 315SC movement and had Rhodian plating on the G white gold versions.

The size at 37mm was absolutely perfect.  I am a large guy - weighing in at 300 pounds and the 37mm is perfect (I am 185cm and 130Kg).
In my opinion the 38mm 5296 is too big - having 21mm strap size and 38mm diameter.

The 5107/5127 is the perfect modern Calatrava.

I hail this beautiful piece as the best and unfortunately forgotten piece of Patek history.

Oh how I crave the days of the Rolls Royce Silver Seraph and pink grey furniture!!!

I have owned both of these in White Gold and I think the 5107 had the edge.

Sorry but I tell the truth..... I so loved the 5107 but had to part with it for personal reasons.

About the Patek Philippe Complications Ref. 130

The Patek Philippe Reference 130 is a significant chronograph model, notable for its classic design and the various configurations in which it was produced. While many examples feature a standard chronograph layout, specific iterations, such as those with split-seconds functionality, represent a higher echelon of horological complexity within the reference. The model is recognized for its balanced proportions and the legibility of its dial, making it a favored choice among collectors seeking vintage Patek Philippe chronographs.

This particular example of the Reference 130 is distinguished by its yellow gold case, measuring 33mm in diameter. It houses a manual-winding movement, typical for chronographs of its era, and is fitted with a crystal, likely acrylic or sapphire depending on the specific production period and any subsequent servicing. The case construction and movement finishing adhere to Patek Philippe's high standards for precision and durability.

Collector interest in the Reference 130 is driven by its historical importance as an early chronograph from the brand and the rarity of certain dial and complication variations. The presence of unique characteristics, such as Breguet numerals, specific dial signatures, or the absence of a tachymeter scale, can significantly influence its appeal. The reference appeals to those who appreciate the foundational designs of Patek Philippe's chronograph lineage.

But I just cannot imagine 37mm on a 6ft 300 lbs frame being perfect and 38mm too large.. you must have a very small wrist? Do you know the size of your wrist? Really curious. I am same height weight 187lbs (85kg) I find 39-40mm dress watches fit well and size 36-37mm quite small. Sport watches such as Panerai I wear 47mm only. I personally love the 5196. Bought it more than 10 years ago, worn it a couple of times and put it away because I find the size a tad small on my wrist. HAGWE! 🍻 james

I love your enthusiasm for Patek. Keep the great posts coming. I like the 5127 a lot. It would make a great complement to my 5026 I think.

One thing though: i am pretty confident in saying that they are not going to replace the 5296. The 5227 is the replacement and i think this piece is much better as you describe it. Consider that they are willing to do amazing artworks on the case back free of charge. This is like a high end reverso. And even if you dont need an engraving, there are good things to say about the dial and lugs. However, there is a good chance to see a replacement to the 5196 in the near future. Im really looking fo

In the USA a punter is a position on an American football team. He is also called a kicker. I don’t know what a “Patek Punter” is. Would love to know.

Archie is Australian, but they use quite a lot of our slang!! It has its origins in a gambling, but can be used to mean group of people. Someone might say something like ‘your average punter’ meaning ‘your average guy’ . It’s also used as a term for men who frequent ladies of the night! One of those multi use context based slang words. What is slang word punter? noun. 1 informal, chiefly British a person who gambles, places a bet, or makes a risky investment. • a customer or client, especially
