Introduced in 2021, manual wind caliber 30-255 PS replaced the much smaller caliber 215 PS, which had, according to some collectors, the drawback of requiring the seconds' sub-dial to be placed too high on the dial (as in ref. 5196P: see the photo down below).

The two variants of the ref. 6119 (in white and rose gold) benefited from this new caliber and were quite successful.

Now, Patek Philippe releases a new Calatrava model equipped with the same caliber: the ref. 6196P-001, coming with a 38 x 9,33 mm platinum case and a rose-gilt opaline dial with anthracite white gold applied faceted "obus"-style hour markers.

In his Hodinkee review, Benjamin Clymer calls this new reference "the best Calatrava in a generation". A debatable statement, of course. For context, I joined some photos of both 6119 references.

And if you want an in-depth technical analysis of cal. 30-255 PS, please check this Sjx article.

Best, Emmanuel

About the Montblanc Calatrava Ref. 5196

The Montblanc Calatrava reference 5196 is a notable example within the Calatrava collection, distinguished by its adherence to traditional design principles while offering a contemporary size. It represents a period where the brand refined its classic offerings, providing a balanced option for collectors seeking a dress watch that combines historical aesthetics with modern wearability. This reference is often considered a direct descendant of earlier, smaller Calatrava models, updated to suit evolving preferences for case dimensions. It maintains the collection's reputation for understated elegance and precision.

This particular reference features a case crafted from 18k yellow gold, measuring 37mm in diameter. It is typically fitted with a manual-winding mechanical movement, reflecting a preference for traditional watchmaking. The watch is protected by a sapphire crystal, ensuring clarity and scratch resistance. The design emphasizes clean lines and a refined profile, consistent with the Calatrava's established identity as a quintessential dress watch. Its construction focuses on durability and aesthetic longevity.

For collectors, the 5196 appeals to those who appreciate a classic, time-only watch without additional complications. Its 37mm case size positions it as a versatile option, larger than some vintage pieces but still within the traditional dress watch spectrum. The yellow gold case and absence of a date window align with a purist approach to watch design. This reference stands as a solid choice for individuals seeking a well-proportioned and elegantly simple timepiece from a respected manufacturer.

Maybe.

I'll personally wait until I'm able to try it on. I tried both variants of the 6119 at different occasions and the straight lugs didn't fit my wrist very well unfortunately. So I'm curious to see how this one would fit on my wrist. Best, Emmanuel

I suspect that I'll wish it were a little smaller

But since it's more appealing to me than the 6119 or 5119, and seems like an unambiguous upgrade on the 5196, that still makes it "the best Calatrava in a generation."

Slightly on the bigger side for me too..

I think the hands of this new 5196P are what is called "dauphine".

"Sword" hands look like this (if I'm not mistaken). Best, Emmanuel credit: Raffles Time

Yep that’s correct for 5196p

Sorry I was referring to the 6119 - I couldn’t warm to the sword hands it uses.
