Crown Comfort shares his profound impressions after a weekend with a vintage Patek Philippe Calatrava 2552, affectionately known as the 'Disco Volante.' This hands-on review delves into the subtle details and enduring charm of this classic timepiece, powered by the automatic Caliber 12-600, and explores how it captivated a collector previously drawn to similar vintage Grand Prix models.

Friends,

Time to share a recent “on-the-wrist” experience with a vintage Patek Calatrava, the 2552 with the amazing automatic caliber 12-600.

I think my liking of calatrava-style vintage GPs caught some attention in the forum and our dear member Baron / Joe decided it was time for me to try on a “real” Calatrava.

Of course, he would not have any hidden intentions to convince another Purist to venture into vintage Patek Calatravas (Padj: help me here!!!), no, a pure friendship service.

So for a weekend, I had the honour to wear his yellow gold Patek 2552 and it is time to share my feelings and impressions.

On a first look, a time-only Calatrava watch is not that spectacular, so you could think that it makes no real difference what kind of time-only watch you’re wearing.

But that is very wrong as I learned those two days. The spectacular part is in the very fine details and you indeed need some time to discover and appreciate them.

For one, there is the case with the stepped bezel. It gives the watch a larger feeling and adds a lot of interest and refinement to the case itself.

Then, the hands. Look at that seconds hand and also the dauphine hour/minute hands how three-dimensional they are. When you move the watch on your wrist in the light, those are truly stunning.

In conjunction with the indexes and the opaline white dial it provides tremendous pleasure to look down on the wrist.

Another very fine detail is the PP crown. The profile shot also very nicely shows the stepped case in its full glory.

The case back hides what’s inside and sorry, no, I did not open it up, but we know inside ticks the superbly decorated automatic movement 12-600.

So what can I say? Have I been vladd’ed?

I would say possibly yes. The very fine details of the 2552 make a great package and for this Reference, the train has not yet left the station even though it won’t be so for long.

There was one small disturbance during that GTG however, and that was due to our friend Mike H.

He let me play with the wonder watch Patek and oh man!!!

Ok, I don’t even need to waste my thoughts on this one, I need to focus. Focus! Focus!

Many thanks to Joe for letting me wear the Patek 2552 and I can tell you, I’m hooked. It will take some time and possibly good luck and right timing, but it is on my radar for sure.

Best,

CC

About the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 2552

The Patek Philippe Reference 2552, often referred to as a "Disco Volante" due to its distinctive case profile, represents a significant design departure for the manufacturer in the mid-20th century. This reference is characterized by its broad, flat bezel and integrated lugs, presenting a sleek and modern aesthetic that was forward-looking for its era. It stands apart from more traditional Patek Philippe designs of the period, appealing to collectors who appreciate mid-century modernism in horology.

This particular reference features an 18k white gold case, measuring 38mm in diameter, which was a substantial size for a dress watch at the time of its production. The watch is powered by a manual-wind movement, specifically the Caliber 2552, which offers a power reserve of 40 hours. A sapphire crystal protects the silver dial, and the watch is rated for 30 meters of water resistance, typical for a dress watch of its construction.

For collectors, the Reference 2552 is notable for its unique case architecture and its representation of Patek Philippe's willingness to explore contemporary design trends. Its distinctive profile makes it easily recognizable and a conversation piece among enthusiasts. Variants of this reference may exist with different dial signatures, indicating partnerships with specific retailers, a practice that adds another layer of historical interest for collectors.

Joe is a very dangerous navigator ! From the minute you tried it on, there was no way out ! Of course you have been gently hooked and vladded with delight even and... you made well. Don’t even try to resist, it is hopeless ! Welcome to the club of the consenting victims of the navigator LOL. Looking forward to seeing your « real » Calatrava! Best, Mike PS: I am wearing my Wonder Watch today, top banana

I am hoping to add a 2552 in my humble collection soon (struggling between this and a 5054G). The one you worn is in particular good condition!
