I’d been looking for a dress watch for more than 1 year and finally I ended up buying a PP 5738P Golden Ellipse. I wanted something a bit different… Its lugless design and 39.5 x 34.5 x 5.9 mm size make it fit nicely on the wrist. It’s not a light watch because of the full platinum case and gold dial, you feel it on your wrist. But the main features of the watch are the “explosive” blue sunburst dial and the bezel. The gold batons and hands are a nice touch to overall dial design. I like to play with it in the sunlight and see the reflection of the light on the dial. Although it’s only a 2 hands watch, it breathes HH at its best!

Inside is the venerable ultra-thin caliber 240 that this year celebrates 40 years. It debuted in the ultra-thin 3738 Golden Ellipse in 1977; over the years the 27 x 2.53 mm caliber has been optimized including a Spiromax® balance spring in Silinvar®, new tooth profile of the going train, etc to improve the rate accuracy and reliability.

I know it’s not for anyone, usually it’s not the first Patek you buy it but…I love it.

With the same amount of money one can buy easily an Annual calendar in gold or any Nautilus in steel. But, at least in this case, I considered the simplicity more important than complexity.

Timeless, refined, beautifully put together…

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 3738

The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse reference 3738 is a notable iteration within the Golden Ellipse collection, distinguished by its self-winding movement and adherence to the collection's distinctive elliptical case shape. This reference represents a modernization of the original Golden Ellipse concept, offering a contemporary yet classic interpretation of Patek Philippe's design philosophy. It is often recognized for its refined proportions and the integration of an automatic caliber, setting it apart from earlier manual-wind versions.

This reference typically features a case crafted from precious metals, with common variations in yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, and platinum. The case diameter is generally around 33mm by 38mm, maintaining the characteristic golden ratio proportions of the Ellipse. It houses a self-winding mechanical movement, specifically the Caliber 240, known for its ultra-thin profile and integrated micro-rotor, which contributes to the watch's slender silhouette. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal.

For collectors, the reference 3738 holds appeal as a sophisticated dress watch that embodies Patek Philippe's design heritage while offering the convenience of an automatic movement. It represents a significant period in the evolution of the Golden Ellipse, bridging earlier designs with later iterations. The various metal and dial configurations provide options for collectors seeking specific aesthetic preferences within this enduring model line.
