dmedly's inaugural post offers a candid and relatable account of a collector's journey, from early watch enthusiasm to acquiring a Patek Philippe Ref. 5085/1A. His story resonates with many who navigate the often-misunderstood passion for horology among friends and family, providing a personal narrative on the evolution of taste and the deep satisfaction found in owning a truly special timepiece.

Patek Philippe Reference 5085
The Reference 5085 represents Patek Philippe's approach to automatic complications during its production period from 1997 to 2008. This reference combines automatic timekeeping with moon phase and date displays in a 36mm case format. The watch positions itself within Patek Philippe's complicated timepiece offerings through its dual calendar functions.
The 36mm case is crafted from 18k white gold with a smooth bezel and sapphire crystal. The silvered dial accommodates the moon phase and date complications. The watch operates on the automatic Caliber 315 S IRM QU movement, providing 48 hours of power reserve. Water resistance extends to 30 meters, and the watch is fitted with a leather strap.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking Patek Philippe complications in a moderate case size. The combination of moon phase and date functions in white gold construction targets those interested in astronomical complications without perpetual calendar complexity. The eleven-year production run from 1997 to 2008 established this reference within Patek Philippe's contemporary complicated watch portfolio.
Welcome here! Best, Nicolas
that you decided to post your story after reading only. Welcome! Your passion is all what counts and from your story I would say there is lots of passion :-) Looking forward to your further contributions. Congrats you got yourself a great watch - once more. Oliver
I'd say go with the 5712r. With the synthetic strap, the watch would be great for everyday use.
Decided against the 5712 due to the dial being of a similar design to the late "great" PP5085. Needed a change, something to excite me again...which the 5726 has! Cheers
I loved the 5085 too As for changing the strap would you believe I have thought of that exact same combination and have yet to make my mind up I'll try to photoshop it and post the pic here Best Imran
You are far from being alone, when you say "My family and friends really don't understand my enthusiasm for horology and are at a loss as to why I would spend so much on something that "just tells the time." I have had the "pleasure" of listening and responding to that very same question on many occasions! LOL Your replacement choice imo is an excellent one. Now that you have made the first step with your post, the rest will be easy..........look forward to reading further contributions from you
