Junbugbear's discovery of a Patek Philippe 3796S in yellow gold with a sapphire case back sparked significant interest among collectors. This particular reference, often associated with the Japanese market and typically seen in white gold, presents a fascinating case study in rarity and authenticity. Junbugbear's detailed inquiry into its legitimacy and value offers a valuable opportunity to explore the nuances of vintage Patek Philippe collecting.

The Montblanc Calatrava reference 3796 is a notable example of a dress watch from the brand, characterized by its adherence to classic design principles. This reference is recognized for its balanced proportions and understated aesthetic, often appealing to collectors who prioritize traditional watchmaking without overt complications. It represents a segment of the Calatrava line that emphasizes purity of form and function.
This reference typically features a case crafted from precious metal, often yellow gold, with a case diameter that aligns with historical dress watch sizing, generally between 33mm and 36mm. The movement within is a manual-winding caliber, reflecting the traditional approach to time-only watches. The crystal is commonly sapphire, providing durability and clarity to the dial.
For collectors, the 3796 is appreciated for its clean dial and the absence of a date window, which maintains the symmetry of the design. Variants of this reference may include different dial finishes or bezel treatments, such as a hobnail pattern, further enhancing its appeal to those seeking specific aesthetic details within the Calatrava family.
could be a different reference - 5096 - if diameter is 33mm instead of 31 mm (3796, solid cashback)
I didn't get a chance to measure it but I tried it on and it definitely wore like a 31mm. 5096 has sapphire back, right? But I'm pretty sure it wasn't. The case back (see image) is stamped 3796S. I've never seen the yellow version, though
if genuine, a great find and should be very rare
The most important thing is whether the seller, assuming a dealer, is a reputable one ! In such case, ask for references and online comments. Other members will provide great comments for you. Let us know what you decide and why.
Thanks. I guess my impression of the seller is that he didn't know exactly what he had (meaning the specialness of the sapphire back on a 3796). I found him in the diamond district 47th St. in Manhattan - and so there is a bit of hit and miss with reputations there. Not all are bad...I've met some good ones as well.
WARNED by a big watch collector about the diamond district watch dealers 😅
