erlendh seeks advice on fitting a vintage Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 3700 on a 6.2-inch wrist, a common challenge for collectors of iconic sports watches. The author compares the 3700's dimensions to a Rolex Oysterquartz and raises crucial questions about bracelet link adjustability. This discussion provides valuable insights for those considering vintage Nautilus models with smaller wrists.

Hello. I'm new here. Considering a vintage 3700, but as I won't be able to try it on, I am unsure if my 6.2 inch wrist will take it well. I've tried a 41 mm AP RO, and that was too big, the lugs would stick out, but I understand the Patek lugs doesn't quite have that same effect. A 3800 would be the alternative, but I'd prefer a 3700, if it's doable.

For reference: I have an Oysterquartz (you'll now know that I have a thing for these all steel bracelet sports watches), this is how the OQ looks on my wrist (on the picture it is a bit off-centered, nevermind that, point is: It fits great). From lug to lug the OQ is approx 4.2 cm (and 36 mm wide). The 3700 isn't all that different in lug size with its 42.8 x 41.8 mm size. So I am hopeful.

But: I am also very curious about how many removable links the 3700 have, that is kind of essential. To make the OQ fit, I had to remove ALL the removable links (I think it was three). However, I didn't have to set the clasp to it's tightest, it's now set on the 4th hole of seven, so the OQ can fit an even smaller wrist than mine. I assume there is room for adjustment in the Patek clasp too, as the 3700 is an old school type clasp, not deployment?

Any advice? Anyone here with a 3700 who can answer the link questions? Thanks!

Rgs Erlend

About the Patek Philippe Nautilus Jumbo Ref. 3700

The Patek Philippe reference 3700 is recognized as the original Nautilus model. It established the distinctive porthole-inspired case design and integrated bracelet that define the collection. This reference was produced for a significant period, laying the foundation for subsequent Nautilus iterations and solidifying its place in the brand's sports watch offerings.

This reference features a stainless steel case measuring 42 mm in diameter and 7.6 mm in thickness, fitted with a sapphire crystal. It houses the self-winding Caliber 28-20 C, which provides a power reserve of 45 hours. The watch is water-resistant to 120 meters and typically presents with a blue dial, offering a date complication.

The 3700 appeals to collectors interested in the foundational pieces of significant watch lines. It represents the initial vision for the Nautilus, preceding later mid-size and complicated versions. Its production run from 1976 to 1990 saw various dial and bracelet configurations, making specific examples of interest to those studying the model's evolution.

Well, it is difficult to answer this question as I never had a 3700 in my hands. I have a 5712 and my wrist is about the same size as yours. There is still the 1.5 link left on my bracelet which can be taken off. It is perfect on my wrist in terms of comfort and, to me, aesthetically speaking. But, I don't know how the 3700's bracelet is setup and if it has the same number of links. I hope someone can bring the info to you but it is quite a rare bird indeed. Maybe you can contact a Patek AD or b

I have PMed a couple of skinny-wristed 5711 owners who say the same. So I am now confident the 5711 will fit my wrist. Question remains if the 3700 have enough removable links or if it's different somehow, but that's a bridge to cross later, for now, the Patek hunt is on.

Dear Erlend, I can identify with you because I have the same size wrist. And yes, it can be a challenge to find watches that fit properly from a visual as well as comfort standpoint. But in this case, you are going to be fine with the 3700, or for that matter, even the 5711 Nautilus. I can tell you this with confidence because I own both references and each of their bracelets can be sized by the natural removal of links to fit me perfectly. You'll probably have to remove most/all of the adjustab

sorts of adjustments until I can get a watch to feel just right, the same as you did with your Rolex. The 3700 does not have the adjustable "fitting clasp" as your Rolex so you don't have the capability of getting close and then adjusting the clasp by moving a springbar for exact fitting. The 3700 has the blade style folding clasp which is different from the double folding clasp seen on the later Nautilus models. That can affect fitting as the position of the blade on the inside of your wrist ma

My conclusion is there won't be a problem with the 5711, while there still are some questions surrounding the 3700. But then, if one gets the chance at a 3700, you've got to take it, right? Worst case I'll have to sell it and get a 5711. I'll keep you updated, but it might take a while...
