Emmanuel, known as quattro on WatchProSite, presents a heartfelt tribute to the late Cpt Scarlet and his beloved Patek Philippe Ref. 2434. This article delves into the nuances of a reference that not only initiated a collector's passion but also held profound personal significance, including its connection to David Bowie. Emmanuel meticulously compiles images from various sources, offering a comprehensive visual exploration of this discreet yet appealing vintage Patek Philippe.

If I make no mistake, this is the reference of our dear Cpt Scarlet's vintage Patek Philippe watch: the one which initiated his passion for the brand and, most importantly, the one he wore at his wedding.

The four photos below belong to a Japanese collector known as @sin5234 on IG.

Cpt Scarlet loved his watch very dearly. And he liked the fact that David Bowie wore the same reference!

Below are four photos he posted along the years.

Antiquorum sold an example of this reference in 2012 with a rare buckle signed with a “double-P” (the crowns signed with a double-P were reserved for watches with the automatic cals. 12-600 and 27-460).

The photos below of an example sold by Sotheby's allow to see more clearly the case profile.

Unfortunately, I haven't found photos showing the shaped, manual winding, 9-90 caliber.

In the photos below of an example sold by Phillips, the case band seems to be more strongly faceted instead of being smoothly rounded: could it be due to some excessive polishing?

Finally, I have found photos of an example with an applied pyramidal marker at 6 o'clock.

As a conclusion, I must say that our dear Cpt Scarlet had great taste because this reference is as appealing as it is discreet and simple.

Thanks for reading.

Best, Emmanuel

About the Patek Philippe Gondolo Ref. 2434

The Patek Philippe Gondolo reference 2434 is a distinguished rectangular dress watch, embodying the brand's commitment to classic horological design in the mid-20th century. This reference is characterized by its elongated, gently curved case, which provides a sophisticated profile on the wrist. It represents a period when Patek Philippe explored various elegant forms beyond the traditional round case, contributing to the diversity of its formal watch offerings.

Crafted in precious metals, the case of the 2434 typically houses a manually wound movement, reflecting the mechanical precision expected from Patek Philippe during this era. The design emphasizes clean lines and a refined aesthetic, with a focus on the interplay between the case shape and the dial layout. The crystal is typically a domed or curved acrylic, complementing the contours of the case.

This reference appeals to collectors who appreciate vintage Patek Philippe timepieces with distinctive case architectures. Its rectangular form offers an alternative to the more common Calatrava styles, providing a unique aesthetic within the brand's historical catalog. The 2434 is a testament to Patek Philippe's enduring legacy in producing watches that combine technical excellence with understated design.
