Harry2's account of competing in the Bondi to Bronte ocean swim with his Panerai PAM449 provides a compelling real-world test of a dive watch. His decision to wear the PAM449, drawing inspiration from its historical military diver lineage, offers a unique perspective on connecting a watch's heritage with personal challenges. This post highlights the practical application and durability of a luxury sports watch in demanding conditions.

Team,

Today I competed in the Bondi to Bronte ocean swimming race in Sydney. However, due to weather conditions at Bronte Beach the course was changed to a 2km Bondi Beach only swim.

How does this relate to watches? I wore my PAM449! I knew the swim was going to be hard, water temp was 16C and I have not done any ocean swimming before, so I anticipated that this would be a difficult event. I decided that I would use the legend of the Marine Miltare divers to inspire me when it got tough. A quick lap of Bondi Beach is nothing compared to attaching mines to British warships in Alexandria harbour isn’t it?

Here I am before the event, Panerai on wrist:

And here is the after shot, I didn’t stop shivering for 20-30 minutes, I was freezing! Also a bit confused. When I got out I think the race officials looked a bit concerned... my girlfriend counted 8 ambulances called to the race finish!

Now time to refuel!

As you can see, the 449 and it’s limited Di Stefano strap did very well. No issues! The strap was subject to a salt water wash process that makes it waterproof.

My race time was 43 minutes, not bad for first go. We’ll see if I can get a better time next year!

Enjoy your weekend team.

About the Panerai Radiomir S.L.C. 3 Days Ref. PAM449

The Panerai PAM449 is a special edition Radiomir model, distinguished by its historical design elements and limited production. It represents a specific aesthetic within the Radiomir collection, appealing to collectors who appreciate vintage-inspired details and a more traditional Panerai presentation. This reference is notable for its absence of the SLC logo on the dial, a feature often sought after by enthusiasts for its clean, uncluttered appearance. It stands apart from contemporary Radiomir offerings through its adherence to certain historical design cues.

This model features a 47mm polished steel case, characteristic of early Panerai designs, providing a substantial presence on the wrist without feeling excessively thick. It is fitted with a 2.8mm Plexiglas crystal, further enhancing its vintage appeal and offering a warm distortion effect. The watch is powered by the manual-wind Calibre P.3000, an in-house movement known for its robust construction and a power reserve of three days. The polished steel bezel frames a dial designed for legibility.

The PAM449 holds particular relevance for collectors drawn to Radiomir models that echo the brand's heritage. Its combination of a 47mm case, Plexiglas crystal, and a clean dial without extraneous branding positions it as a desirable piece for those seeking a purist interpretation of the Radiomir. It offers an alternative to models with gold hands, providing a distinct visual identity within the broader Panerai catalog and appealing to those who prioritize historical accuracy in their collection.

43 minutes is not a bad time at all! I had a close friend who is a multi-Ironman triathlete who does 2km swims as well. That's pretty amazing you did it with the watch on!
